Reading is one of the basic language skills that are essential to educate students. It

will not successfully occur without comprehension. Reading comprehension is a skill

that is critical in the educational success of all individuals. In today’s time, many

students have difficulties in understanding the texts that may result in lack of interest in

learning. This study was done to investigate the reading skills and reading difficulties of

Grade 10 students of Bucal National High School.

This research used the qualitative method with case study strategy. Since the aim of

the research is to identify and describe some of the different reading problems of

students as well as to determine the techniques that they used to overcome these

v
difficulties. A total of 20 selected Grade 10 students are the respondents. The top and

average students of every sections are the sample of this research. The obtained data

was determined through reading test and interview. The researchers applied the

reading test to 20 selected students that contains 10- item multiple choice questions. In

order to support the reading test, the researchers conducted an interview based from

their research questions.

Having collected all the data from reading test and interview, the results of data

analysis showed that students who are capable to read and have interest in reading can

easily analyze the text while the students who are not fond of reading are having

difficulties in comprehending the text. Most of the problems faced by students are the

lack of vocabulary that makes them not familiar with the words available in the text. In

addition, most students prefer to use book as an effective reading material since it

contains the information and reading passage that can improve their learning and

reading skills. Moreover, reading is the foundation of all learning but people can’t read if

they can’t write. Therefore, most students can learn their lessons in writing their lectures

in order to remember the topic. The techniques of students to solve the encountered

reading difficulties were checking the words in dictionary, asking other people and

searching on internet. Indeed, reading competencies of the students were based on

how they perceived and cope up the reading difficulties.
