College Comparative Analysis Essay

I didn’t realize how unprepared I was for college. Doing this research has helped me get

my life in order. For my senior defense artifact, we had to make a college plan for the top two

colleges of our choice. My first college is Paul Mitchell’s Beauty school in Pasadena.

and my second is Cal State Dominguez Hills. We have to research about the tuition, the cost of

books, supplies, financial aid, the demographics, class size, gender rates, graduation rates, school

rankings and transfer rates. When comparing both colleges and based on all the research and data

I collected, I have concluded that Paul Mitchell’s Beauty School is my choice.

The tuition and cost for Paul Mitchell’s Beauty School is $19,500. The cost for books and

supplies is $2,926.32. However, the tuition and cost for Cal State Dominguez Hills is $6,213.

The cost for books and supplies at Cal State Dominguez Hills is $1,900. The tuition and cost for

both schools are affordable but Cal State Dominguez Hills is definitely more affordable for my

expenses. For example, with Paul Mitchell’s, tuition it will be more expensive for me plus my

expenses than Cal State Dominguez Hills tuition.

The demographics on both colleges are different because Paul Mitchell’s class size is 200

students and in Cal state Dominguez Hill the class size is 11,000 undergraduate students. For

Gender Rates, Paul Mitchell has 94.1% of women and 5.88% men but Cal State Dominguez
Hills, the gender rate is 72% of women and 53% of men. The difference between these school is

Paul Mitchell’s Beauty School has more women than Cal State Dominguez Hill. The Graduation

Rates for Paul Mitchell’s Beauty School is 84% and for Cal State Dominguez Hill is 47%. The

Transfer Rate for Paul Mitchell’s Beauty School is 60% and for Cal State Dominguez Hill is

77%. The school ranking for Paul Mitchell’s Beauty School is ranked #18 in Cosmetology

schools and Cal State Dominguez Hill is ranked #88.

The logistics like housing, transportation, resources and climate for Paul Mitchell’s

Beauty School and Cal State Dominguez Hill is different from each other. The transportation to

drive to get to Paul Mitchell’s Beauty School from my house is 45 minutes away and to get to

Cal State Dominguez Hill is 35 minutes away, that is a 10 minute difference. The cost for gas to

get to Paul Mitchell’s Beauty School is $30 a week and parking is free. However, the cost for gas

to Cal State Dominguez Hill is also $30 a week but parking is $14 a month. If I were to take the

bus to Paul Mitchell’s Beauty School, I will spend about $4 to get to Paul Mitchell’s Beauty

school and to get to Cal State Dominguez Hill on the bus it will be $3.25 in total.

In conclusion, what I learned through this experience and how this process helped me in

clarifying and preparing myself for college can be very expensive. Also, I learned that having a

budget can help you spend money the right way because you’ll have to pay your classes off and

still pay your expenses. However, this process has helped me prepare for college because now I

know what to look for in colleges. This process made me think what I want to be and what career

I want to be in and I want to go to Paul Mitchell’s Beauty School to become a professional

cosmetologist and start my own Beauty business.
