Title: Acid-carbonate titration

Aim: To standardize a hydrochloric acid solution of sodium carbonate

Apparatus and Materials: burette, pipette, balance, conical flask, beakers, volumetric flask,

weighing scale, wash bottle, hydrochloric acid, methyl orange indicator, sodium carbonate,

distilled water, white tile, filter funnel

Method: 1) 1.31 g of Na2CO3 was weighed

2) 250cm3 of Na2CO3 was added to a volumetric flask and made up to the mark

3) 25cm3 of the HCL solution was pipetted into a conical flask and three drops of

methyl orange were added

4) The HCL solution was titrated against the Na2CO3

5) The titration was repeated until the volumes obtained were within 0.1 cm3 of

each other

1. Conc. Of Na2CO3 in g/dm3 and mol/dm3

2. The number of moles of Na2CO3 used in titration

3. Equation for reaction

4. Number of moles of HCL used in titration

5. Molarity of HCL

6. What is a primary standard? Identify three properties that a primary standard must
