LISTENING SCRIPT
H: Yes, I always cook. I often cook with my roommate, and we always make Chinese of Japanese food.
How about you?
D: Well, I don’t really cook that often. I’m really busy during the week. So, I always just get something at the
shop and get that. But, during the weekends, I always cook during the weekends because I really like making
food. That’s what I do.
D: Only occasionally, because I’m really busy during the week, and I prefer cooking, so not really often. I
don’t go out really often to eat. Whenever I’m tired, and I don’t have time to cook during the week, I go
and eat out with a friend, so! And you?
H: Well, I always, so I normally go and eat out during the weekend with my friends or
family. Taken from English Listening Lesson Library Online.

Hello!
I am Michael Sanders and I’m Australian. I live in a house in
San Francisco. It has a living room, a kitchen, a bathroom, a
dining room and two bedrooms. It is a beautiful white house.
It has also a garage. There is a balcony in the principal
bedroom and there are some beautiful flowers in the garden.
I work for a very important firm in San Francisco. I usually
work at home, but I sometimes go to the office to see some
clients. I speak four languages; English, Spanish, French and
German because we have clients from different parts of the
world. There are clients from Spain, Mexico, Canada, France
and The States. At the weekend, I usually see some friends
and we go to a restaurant to have some nice food. San
Francisco is a beautiful place. There are some nice buildings
in the city and a fantastic bridge. The streets are always
clean and people are so friendly. I love having a walk at night
with my dog, Beethoven; yes, it is an adorable St. Bernard
dog.

Hi, I'm Mike and this is my daily routine. I get up early every day, around 6:30 and I go to the gym for a work-out
before I go to work. I usually do aerobic exercise for a while and then do some weight lifting for maybe half an
hour at the gym, then I'll return home, and as I work from my home, I turn on my computer and start working on
what needs to be done.
I usually skip breakfast and I'll work until about 12:00 then I'll prepare lunch and have a fairly big lunch because I
don't eat breakfast. Then after lunch, I'll go back, continue working on Internet or whatever I have to do for work,
until about 6:00 when I usually start getting phone calls from friends of mine who live abroad and then in the
evenings if I'm not using my time doing things with the Internet or surfing the web, then I'm speaking to people on
the Internet or on my phone and that pretty much sums up my usual daily routine.

A: Hey, I’m reading this really interesting article about the human body.
B: Yeah? Well, we know all about that from biology lessons.
A: No, we didn’t learn much at all at school! They’re discovering loads more things all the time.
Really amazing things! Did you know that only about one tenth of the cells in your body are
really you? The rest are bacteria.
B: What? I’m not really me?
A: No, of course you are you, but you also have millions, or trillions, of bacteria in you.
B: Eeeeuuugh!
A: No, they’re mostly really helpful. Someone did an experiment to see if animals can live
without bacteria, and he found that a lot of them died or had to have a special diet. Animals
need bacteria to digest food, you see. So we’re better off with bacteria.
B: Unless the bacteria are bad.
A: Unless they are bad, but they’re nearly all good. Oh yeah, and going back to cells, do you
know how many cells you have in your body?
B: Quite a lot, I’d say. A good few.
A: Yeah, but how many?
B: I don’t know. I’m not mathematical.
A: 7 octillion! That’s 7 plus 27 noughts.
B: I knew it was a lot.
A: OK, that’s an amazingly huge number, almost impossible to imagine. But the really weird
thing is that most of the atoms are empty space, just air or nothingness. And if you took out the
empty space, you could fit your body inside a tiny cube which measures one 500th of a
centimetre on either side. That’s a box measuring 0.002 of a centimetre on each side. You’d be
much too small to see.
B: Mmm, I can imagine that. It sounds like something that would happen in a really bad
Hollywood movie. You know, a mad scientist goes: (funny voice) ‘I’m going to extract all the air
from your body’. OK, enough facts for one day.
A: Don’t go! One last thing, did you know …
B: No.
A: Did you know that you probably have mites in your eyelashes?
B: Mites in my eyelashes? What are mites exactly anyway?
A: Yeah, they’re very small creatures, like insects, only not insects. They’re about a third of a
millimetre long, so you can’t really see them. These particular mites live in eyelashes and
eyebrows.
B: But in mine?
A: Well, maybe not. Only about 50% of people have them, and more older people. So you
might not have any. Anyway, they’re completely harmless, they just eat dead skin.
B: Yeah, right, harmless. I really would have preferred not to know that.
A: Sorry.
B: I mean, really!

SAN FRANCISCO - June 8, 2016 - Airbnb, the world’s leading community-driven hospitality
company, today announced the launch of a new tool that allows employees to book business travel
for co-workers. As business travel has tripled in growth on Airbnb in 2016, this new feature allows
business partners like travel managers and executive assistants to be able to book Airbnb listings
on behalf of other employees. This new tool adds a whole new dimension to the way companies are
able to book listings for all their business travel needs.
“More and more business travelers are choosing to stay with Airbnb while they are on the road, so
they get the chance to not just visit, but live in a city, even if it’s for one night,” said Lex Bayer, Head
of Global Payments and Business Development at Airbnb. “Our hosts offer more than just generic
hospitality, they help travelers live in the heart of local neighborhoods. We are excited that this
product update will introduce a whole new segment of business travelers to this experience.”
To date, 50,000 companies have used Airbnb for Business to make a booking and 10 percent of all
travel that happens on Airbnb is business travel. To help travelers feel at home when they are on
the road, business travelers can choose from thousands of Business Travel Ready listings. With all
the essential amenities and services a business traveler needs like free WiFi, laptop-friendly
workspaces and 24 hour check-in, Business Travel Ready listings have everything a traveler needs
to be successful on the road.

Guest: Excuse me? You mean a room for five dollars? I didn't know the special was so good.
Hotel Clerk: No, no, no. According to our records, a room for five guests was booked under your name.
Guest: No. No. Hold on. There must be some mistake.
Hotel Clerk: Okay. Let's check this again. Okay, Mr. Charles C. Nelson for tonight . . .
Guest: Ah. There's the problem. My name is Charles Nelson, not Charles C. Nelson. [Uhh] You must have
two guests under the name.
Hotel Clerk: Okay. Let me check this again. Oh. Okay. Here we are.
Guest: Yeah.
Hotel Clerk: Charles Nelson. A room for one for the 19th . . .
Guest: Wait, wait! It was for tonight. Not tomorrow night.
Hotel Clerk: Hum. Hum. I don't think we have any rooms for tonight. There's a convention going on in town,
and uh, let's see. Yeah, no rooms.
Guest: Ah come on! You must have something. Anything.
Hotel Clerk: Well. We do have some rooms under renovation with just a roll-a-way bed. [U-hh] None of the
normal amenities like a TV or working shower or toilet.
Guest: Ah man. Come on. There must be something else.
Hotel Clerk: Well. Let, let me check my computer here. Ah!
Guest: What?
Hotel Clerk: There has been a cancellation for this evening. A honeymoon suite is now available.
Guest: Great. I'll take it.
Hotel Clerk: But I'll have to charge you two hundred fifty dollars for the night.
Guest: Ah. Man. I should get a discount for the inconvenience.
Hotel Clerk: Well. The best I can give you is a ten percent discount plus a ticket for a free continental
breakfast.
Guest: Hey. Isn't the breakfast free anyway?
Hotel Clerk: Well, only on weekends.
Guest: I want to talk to the manager.
Hotel Clerk: Wait, wait, wait Mr. Nelson. I think I can give you an additional 15 percent discount and I'll
throw in a free room for the next time you visit us.

Dear Sir/Madam,1
2 I am writing to complain about the service I got from your taxi company on Friday 21 st May.
3 I had booked a taxi to leave from Liverpool at 14.30.
The car actually arrived at 15.20 after I had phoned twice to ask where it was. Not only was the
car late, but it was very dirty and the driver had been smoking in it on his way to collect me.
Despite having said I need to go to the Terminal 2, the driver fist took me to Terminal 3. All of
this meant that I had to rush my check-in and that I was nearly late for my plane.
4 Because of this very inadequate service, I request a refund of the $30 fare.
I look forward to a prompt response from you on this matter.
5 Yours faithfully,
Adam Smith

sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A-H the one which

A Then the falling dominoes head out of the room into the streets, causing progressively
larger objects to tumble.
B These were all chosen to suit the town and fit in with the people’s way of life.
C Getting there involved driving along 48 kilometres of dirt roads and crossing twelve rivers.
D Iruya is situated 3000 metres above sea level and the film crew was not used to working in
such conditions.
E The prop department did construct a small version on site, but most of the work was done
in a studio in London.
F Added to this was the total of one hundred and thirty 'actors' who were recruited from a five
neighbouring towns.
G Setting up the dominoes on the table took a team of experts three days, but took just 14
seconds to topple.
H Not so with the famous Irish drink company Guinness.
The location chosen for the commercial was Iruya, a village high up in the mountains of north-
west Argentina 3_____ the journey there could take up to ten hours. Asked why this remote
destination was chosen for the shoot, the director said that even though it was the most difficult
location they could have picked, it was perfect.

For one month, the village, population thousand, increased in size by almost thirty percent. One
hundred and forty crew members descended on the village. These included the world record
holders in domino toppling, Weijers Domino productions from the Netherlands
4 _____ creating this film was no easy task.
Preparations for filming took well over a month. Twenty six truckloads of objects were brought
in. 5 _____ they included 10,000 books, 400 tyres, 75 mirrors, 50 fridges, 45 wardrobes and 6
cars. Setting the objects up took skill and patience. They needed to be arranged so they would
fall over easily, and this involved balancing them on stones. Some of the sequences had to be
reshot 15 times and 24 hours of footage was captured. However, the sequence in which six
cars fell over was successfully shot in just one take.
Filming in this location was not without its difficulties. Firstly, being so isolated, it was hard to
obtain resources at short notice. The second problem was the high altitude 6_____ it was also
hard working with the villagers who had no experience of film-making. Finally, setting and
resetting the props caused a good deal of frustration.
These days when CGI is all the rage, it was surprising that so little of the work was done using
computer effects. The only sequence that used computer graphics was the one in which the
tower of books fluttered open to reveal a pint of Guinness 7 _____. Even so, this was no simple
matter. They had to ensure that all the books in the tower had a different appearance.
Director Nicolai Fuglsig said about the project: ‘Despite all the challenges, the cast was fantastic
and it was a really amazing experience.’ Whether or not the effort put into the advert pays off
is another matter entirely.

Mark Want to make sure that journey is a success? Well, don’t cut corners – here are my top
five tips for travellers. First of all, plan ahead. You can save a lot of money by booking your
rooms, hotel, campsite, train tickets... whatever, in advance. There’s nothing nicer than arriving
in a town knowing you’ve got a place to stay – and there’s nothing worse than sleeping on the
beach or in a park because you haven’t! Read what other travellers have to say. Their advice
... in blogs or other sites... can save you money and trouble.
Next, are you driving? Make sure your vehicle is in good condition. Carry with you things
like spare parts, water, petrol and oil. You might have a problem – and help might be a long
way away.
Number three is a simple one. Choose your travelling companions wisely. Driving across
the desert when you’re cold, tired and hungry is no time to find out that you hate the person
sitting next to you.
Money now. Take enough money with you but spend it carefully – that traditional antique
coffee pot is not a bargain if you haven’t got any money left for food. Keep your money safe
and make sure you can get access to money in an emergency. You never know! And finally...
sightseeing. Don’t miss the famous sights, whatever you do. It can be tempting to say you’ll do
it next time – but people are sure to ask you about them and you will feel stupid!

SECTION II. WRITING
I. Read the following pieces of advice and work on the writing task
You must make sure your letter contains both opening and closing remarks.
When we do not know who will receive the letter it is common to write something like:
To whom it may concern,
However, it does not really happen in exams as the rubric will always read:
Write a letter to the manager, to the owner, to the principal, to the editor, etc.
So, the expression “To whom it may concern” is something you cannot use in your composition as
you already know who the addressee is.
Use “Mr. (Surname), Mrs. (Surname)” in case you know what the name of the addressee is.

Writing an essay
The Introduction
The main purpose of the introduction is to present your position (this is also known as the "thesis" or
"argument") on the issue at hand but effective introductory paragraphs are so much more than that.
Before you even get to this thesis statement, for example, the essay should begin with a "hook" that grabs
the reader’s attention and makes them want to read on. Examples of effective hooks include relevant
quotations ("no man is an island") or surprising statistics ("three out of four doctors report that…").
Only then, with the reader’s attention "hooked," should you move on to the thesis. The thesis should be
a clear, one-sentence explanation of your position that leaves no doubt in the reader’s mind about which
side you are on from the beginning of your essay.
Following the thesis, you should provide a mini-outline which previews the examples you will use to support
your thesis in the rest of the essay. Not only does this tell the reader what to expect in the paragraphs to
come but it also gives them a clearer understanding of what the essay is about.
Finally, designing the last sentence in this way has the added benefit of seamlessly moving the reader to
the first paragraph of the body of the paper. In this way we can see that the basic introduction does not
need to be much more than three or four sentences in length. If yours is much longer you might want to
consider editing it down a bit!
The middle paragraphs of the essay are collectively known as the body paragraphs and, as alluded to
above, the main purpose of a body paragraph is to spell out in detail the examples that support your
thesis.
For the first body paragraph you should use your strongest argument or most significant example unless
some other more obvious beginning point (as in the case of chronological explanations) is required. The
first sentence of this paragraph should be the topic sentence of the paragraph that directly relates to the
examples listed in the mini-outline of introductory paragraph.
A one sentence body paragraph that simply cites the example of "George Washington" or "LeBron James"
is not enough, however. No, following this an effective essay will follow up on this topic sentence by
explaining to the reader, in detail, who or what an example is and, more importantly, why that example
is relevant.
Even the most famous examples need context. For example, George Washington’s life was extremely
complex – by using him as an example, do you intend to refer to his honesty, bravery, or maybe even his
wooden teeth? The reader needs to know this and it is your job as the writer to paint the appropriate
picture for them. To do this, it is a good idea to provide the reader with five or six relevant facts about
the life (in general) or event (in particular) you believe most clearly illustrates your point.
Having done that, you then need to explain exactly why this example proves your thesis. The importance
of this step cannot be understated (although it clearly can be underlined); this is, after all, the whole
reason you are providing the example in the first place. Seal the deal by directly stating why this
example is relevant.
The Conclusion
Although the conclusion paragraph comes at the end of your essay it should not be seen as an
afterthought. As the final paragraph is represents your last chance to make your case and, as such, should
follow an extremely rigid format.
Página 5 de 11
GUIA SUPERIOR 1 | GLOBAL LIFE
One way to think of the conclusion is, paradoxically, as a second introduction because it does in fact
contain many of the same features. While it does not need to be too long – four well-crafted sentence
should be enough – it can make or break and essay.
Effective conclusions open with a concluding transition ("in conclusion," "in the end," etc.) and an allusion
to the "hook" used in the introductory paragraph. After that you should immediately provide a restatement
of your thesis statement.
This should be the fourth or fifth time you have repeated your thesis so while you should use a variety of
word choice in the body paragraphs it is an acceptable idea to use some (but not all) of the original
language you used in the introduction. This echoing effect not only reinforces your argument but also ties
it nicely to the second key element of the conclusion: a brief (two or three words is enough) review of the
three main points from the body of the paper.
Having done all of that, the final element – and final sentence in your essay – should be a "global
statement" or "call to action" that gives the reader signals that the discussion has come to an end.

Here are just some of the extreme sports which are popular in Britain:
Kitesurfing: a growing band of enthusiasts have been discovering the thrilling combination of kite,
board and waves. These kites can be up to 17 metres long. Catch a gust and you're motoring - up,
down and across the surf. British Ladies kitesurfing champion Jo Wilson says: "It's always an
adrenalin rush. It's unpredictable. You could jump 5ft or 35ft. You never know if you're going to go
up in the air, and your heart is just going boom, boom, boom all the time."
Coasteering: this is exploring the coastline without worrying about a coastal path or finding a rocky
cliffy cove blocking your route. You climb, dive, swim and clamber from A to B. There are about 15
operators in the UK offering coasteering.
Sky diving: traditional parachuting just doesn't sound risky enough, does it? So now skydiving is the
name for jumping from a plane and listening to your heart pounding as you hurtle towards earth
before you open your parachute at the last moment. Once you've got a few jumps under your parachute
you can throw in some extra risks, for example try a 'hook turn'. Dean Dunbar is a participant of
extremedreams.com and his first sky dive was in 1998. Since then he's been hooked on the buzz of
the extreme, saying: "Every so often I have to go out and do something scary."
Mountain biking: it's been around so long that bikers are no longer satisfied with just going up and
down a mountain. Nowadays thrill seeking mountain bikers want a big slope to go down very, very
fast. "It's pure mad, downhill," according to Dean Dunbar. "People go to old ski resorts, take the chair
lift to the top then bomb down - amazingly not killing themselves."

(Woman) Wasn’t that a fascinating lecture on dolphins? I didn’t know that dolphins
travelled in such large groups or were able to communicate with other
members of their group with those whistle-like sounds.
(Man) And they also use clicks as a sort of sonar.
(Woman) I really couldn’t understand that part of the lecture.
(Man) Yes, the dolphins use clicks to identify objects in the water; they can even
identify tiny objects more than 100 meters away using these clicks.
Scientists believe that a dolphin may even have a sonar-like image in its
brain of a distant object so that it can identify the object long before the
dolphin can actually see the object.
(Woman) So, the dolphins use these clicks.
(Man) I think so, and they have considerably more ability to do this than humans
do.
(Woman) It is hard to believe that; in addition to these sonar clicks, dolphins are
actually learning some human language.
(Man) Yes, I believe that the lecturer said that some dolphins had already learned
about fifty human commands, and that those dolphins were able to
understand not only individual words but words clustered together in
sentences.
(Woman) Dolphins must certainly be amazing to do all of that.

Today’s lecture is on the difference between two literary styles of realism and naturalism.
These two styles have in common a faithfulness to actual experience and mistrust of
idealism.
Although they do have several similarities, realism and naturalism should be clearly
differentiated. The realism objectively reports on events, with the accuracy of the
description as the prime motive. The naturalist, on the other hand, has more of a
philosophic bent; naturalist writings express the writer’s philosophy that human actions are
determined by natural laws such as heredity and environment.

READING.
The statues walked, Easter Islanders say. Archaeologists are still trying to figure out how – and whether their story is a
cautionary tale of environmental disaster or a celebration of human ingenuity.
On a winter night last June, José Antonio Tuki, a 30-year-old artist on
Easter Island, did one of the things he loves best: he left his house
on the southwest coast and hiked north across the island to
Anakena beach. Tuki sat on the sand and gazed at the colossal
human statues – the moai. The statues range from four to 33 feet
and some weigh more than 80 tons. They were carved long ago with
stone tools and then transported up to 11 miles to massive stone
platforms. As Tuki stares at their faces, he feels a connection. ‘It’s
something strange and energetic,’ he says. ‘This is something
produced from my culture, the Rapanui.’ He shakes his head. ‘How
did they do it?’
When the first Polynesian settlers arrived at Rapa Nui (Easter
Island), there were probably only a few dozen of them. The island lies 2,150 miles west of South America and 1,300
miles east of its nearest inhabited neighbour, Pitcairn. Nowadays 12 flights arrive every week from Chile, Peru and
Tahiti, and in 2011 those planes delivered 50,000 tourists, ten times the island’s population. Just about every job on
Easter Island depends on tourism. ‘Without it,’ says Mahina Lucero Teao, head of tourism, ‘everyone would be starving
on Easter Island.’ And the tourists go there for only one thing: the moai.
Several decades ago, the Norwegian adventurer Thor Heyerdahl, helped ignite the world’s curiosity about Easter Island.
He thought the statues had been created by pre-Inca people from Peru, not by Polynesians. Modern science – linguistic,
archaeological and genetic evidence – has proved the moai builders were Polynesian but not how they moved their
creations. Researchers have tended to assume the ancestors dragged the statues somehow, using ropes and wood.
More recently, Pulitzer Prize winner Jared Diamond has suggested that the moai contributed to the downfall of the
islanders. Building and moving the moai needed many people and used up the island’s forest resources. The land which
was cleared was fragile and quickly eroded, so fewer crops could be grown – this process of clearing the land was an
early example of an ecological disaster, according to Diamond. He sees the collapse of their civilization as ‘a worst-case
scenario for what may lie ahead of us in our own future.’
On the other hand, a more optimistic view of the island’s history comes from the archaeologists Terry Hunt of the
University of Hawaii and Carl Lipo of California State University Long Beach. They suggest that the inhabitants actually
pioneered a type of sustainable farming, building thousands of circular stone walls, called manavai, and gardening inside
them. And their theory about how the moai were moved is that they could be ‘walked’ along using a system of only
ropes and a few people.
For José Tuki, as he contemplates these enormous statues, the ambiguity is too fine. ‘I want to know the truth,’ he says,
‘but maybe knowing everything would take its power away.’
