Photosynthesis
How Do Plants get their food?
They make their food through a
process called Photosynthesis.
Photo means “Light”, Synthesis
means “Putting Together”.

A simpler definition?
“It's the process by which the plants
capture sunlight and convert carbon
dioxide from the air and water from
the soil and convert it into food.”
Process of Photosynthesis.
# Photosynthesis takes place in the
plant leaves, the sunlight is trapped
by the green coloured pigments
called CHLOROPHYLL.
# The leaves of the plants have
microscopic holes, known as
STOMATA, through which the
carbon dioxide enters the plant.
# While carbon dioxide is absorbed
by leaves, water enters the plant
through its roots.
# After being absorbed by the roots,
water travels all the way through the
stem to reach the leaves where the
actual process takes place.
# Leaves use energy from the sun
light and combines carbon dioxide
and water to make sugar.
# Just like humans and animals,
plants release Waste. The waste is
expelled as oxygen, which is
essential for our survival.

Experiment to show that life on
earth is possible only because of
photosynthesis.
Aim: To prove that Plants give out
Oxygen during photosynthesis.
Materials Required:
1. Baking Soda Water Solution 5g / L
2. Glass Beaker
3. Glass Funnel
4. Test Tube
5. Aquatic Plants
6. Sunlight
7. Match Stick
8. Smoldering Splinter
Procedure:
1. In a beaker, place the aquatic plant.
2. Cover the plant with a funnel.
3. Fill the beaker with baking soda
solution since air dissolves poorly in
water.
4. Pour water in the test tube and
invert it over the funnel.
5. Keep it in sunlight for 2 – 3 hours.
6. Wait till the test tube is filled up
completely.
7. Now remove the test tube carefully
and introduce a smoldering splinter
into the test tube.
Result:
The smoldering splinter immediately
lights up as oxygen supports
combustion.
Inference:
The experiment thus proves that plants
give out oxygen during Photosynthesis
to make the Earth habitable.
Why is photosynthesis
important for life on Earth?
# Photosynthesis is the only way to
facilitate the process of respiration
in both, humans and animals.
# Without Photosynthesis there
would be little or no oxygen on the
planet.
# Plants, being the only producers,
play an important role in any food
chain, and that’s the reason why the
Earth is habitable.
