Major Rhetorical Analysis

My major is information systems, which in a way is entry-level computer science and

business rolled into one program. Both Computer Science and Information Systems are Bachelor

of Science degree programs. Although computer science may be seen as the more technical field

compared to information systems, this program fills an important bridge in companies.

Ultimately computer science is a very narrowed and focused study, generally on programming

languages and how they work. Information systems provides a vast, broad background that will

allow a student to excel in many different jobs in the information technology (IT) field. Students

will participate in courses on economics, accounting, management, communications, IT

structures, and programming.

The financial and business portion of the information systems degree is something you do

not get from other IT degrees. This background gives you insight on decisions, how things work,

and what is possible from a business perspective that can be beneficial in a career. The economic

courses at UMBC, both macroeconomics and microeconomics, give a great viewpoint on how

the economic world functions. The small and large focus are a great way to get comparable

information that can be applied to many things. UMBC also offers accounting courses for

information systems majors. Both Principles of Accounting 1 and 2 offer students an

understanding of managing business books. This knowledge allows the student to take into their

career a further understanding of how business stay in business and what overall goes into

managing one. This can be beneficial when trying to move up the corporate ladder. This

expertise can allow students in their careers to move into managerial positions by enabling them

to understand functionality of the company.

Further on the topic of managerial experience. Information systems majors also take

courses on management. The specific course offered is MGMT210, The Practice of

Management, focusing on the role of a manager, and how to be successful in a range of

responsibilities. Managers play a huge role in companies, ensuring the employees are working

towards their goal and are effective in achieving that goal. They are also needed in guiding

employees and developing new leaders. MGMT210 allows students to get a needed base to begin

their career to become managers.

The overall tie-in to IT through information systems is the computer courses. Students at

UMBC take a range of hardware courses as well as programming to develop their understanding.

This broad knowledge allows students to be successful from a business perspective. They will be

able to propose new hardware or software that could be used by the company. As well as convey

important information to management, who may not have the technical background needed. The

ability to connect non-technical and technical people is an valuable asset.
