Malaysian Competition Act
Malaysian Competition Act
Malaysian Competition Act
Historical Background
The Act follows the Prime Minister’s unveiling of the New Economic Model which aims to double
Malaysia’s per capita income by 2020 by transforming the Malaysian economy through eight
Strategic Reform Initiatives (SRIs) which include a programme of liberalization and deregulation
to promote a competitive domestic economy.
Purpose
The Act allows the need for a set of measures by the government that would protect and promote
the process of competition by preventing restrictive business practices, which artificially restrict
supply and raise prices of goods and services, and reduce or eliminate unnecessary regulations and
government policies which adversely affect the competitive process and raise the cost of doing
business.
Individuals Affected
The individuals affected by the act are those who dominate the Malaysian market through
monopoly and being dominant in a position. This includes cartels, enterprises, companies, and the
like. The prohibitions placed on these individuals would then increase the quality of life of the
Malaysian citizens.
