PLANNING OVERVIEW – TERM
Year Level Unit Title Human development topic Jesus Topic
2 Jesus Forgives Wondering at the Creator of the Penance
Ability to Work
Overview – explanation of the content of the unit and how it explores the Salvation Topic and development of the Human Person
The unit ‘Jesus Forgives’ explores the work of human life and how it relates to Jesus and his teachings of forgiveness. The unit heavily involves the
concept of work and what work is in today’s society compared to the past. The unit begins by discovering how people work as God intended, with the gifts
that God had given them. This then allowed people to realise how much love God had for them (A1, A2, A3). The unit then goes on to explore how Jesus
renewed the understanding of work and how it is used to draw people closer to God and build on their faith (B1, B2). The final part of the unit is about the
forgiveness of sin and how this is central to Jesus’ teachings. Students will explore how to ask for forgiveness from others and how to work in the way of
Jesus (C1, C2, C3, C4).
Therefore, the overall unit relates to and ties in well with the Jesus Topic of Penance. Penance is a sacrament received by Catholics to have
forgiveness of sin. It is important that through the teachings of this unit of work, students are prepared for when they received the sacrament of
Penance, as well as know how to forgive others during difficult times.

Catholic World View and Teacher Witness (See Teacher Note) Link with Key Understandings and Learning Points by highlighting
Through the unit ‘Jesus Forgives’, students are able to learn what forgiveness is and how to forgive others. It is important that forgiveness is
taught in an authentic and relatable way to young students. Firstly, students will explore the human work, which mainly looks at how they can
help people in the world around them, whether it be at home, school or in their local community. Students explore the ways Jesus worked and
showed love to God and others around him. Students then relate to this as they are able to wonder about the ways they show love to the
people around them and what gifts and skills they use to show this love. This then leads into the forgiveness that Jesus gave to people around
him. Students will begin to look at scripture to make this connection. Lastly, students explore how to ask for forgiveness through more scripture
readings. Students then have the opportunity to reflect on what they have learnt in the whole unit. It is of high importance that students are
given the opportunity to learn about Religious Education in a way that makes a connection to their own life.

Teachers are role models to their students and have experienced forgiving others and receiving forgiveness from others. Being able to turn to
a teacher and ask for their guidance makes this unit more enriching for students as they know the topic of forgiveness is a part of everyone’s
lives, not just their own. This means that students are able to relate to their peers, teachers, staff, school community, and bring their learning to
home and relate to their family. It is important that both teachers and students know what forgiveness is and understand when there are times
where forgiveness is needed. This unit of work allows teachers to explain this to students and gives the students the opportunity to understand
how they need to seek forgiveness from God as well as others.
