HE CHAINED ELEPHANT

When I was a girl I loved circuses, and what I liked most about circuses were animals. I was struck
by a large elephant. During the show, the huge beast displayed its size, weight and strength ... but
after its performance the elephant was held by a chain that imprisoned one of its legs to a small
stake on the ground. However, the stake was just a small piece of wood buried a few inches in the
ground. And although the chain was thick and powerful that animal capable of pulling a tree with
its own strength, could easily tear the stake and flee. The mystery is obvious: What keeps it then?
Why does not the elephant run away? I asked then some teacher, some father, or some uncle about
the mystery of the elephant. Some of them explained to me that the elephant did not escape
because he was trained. Then I asked the obvious question: -If he is trained, why is he chained? I do
not remember having received any coherent answer. Over time I forgot the mystery of the elephant
and the stake ... Some years ago I discovered luckily someone who had found the answer: The circus
elephant does not escape because it has been tied to a stake since very small. I closed my eyes and
imagined the little newborn subject to the stake. I am sure that at that moment the little elephant
pushed, pulled, sweated, tried to escape and could not. The stake was very strong for him. I'm sure
he fell asleep exhausted and the next day he tried again, and also the other and the one who
followed ... Until one day, a terrible day for his story, the animal accepted his helplessness and
resigned himself to his fate . This huge and powerful elephant, which we see in the circus, does not
escape because he believes he CAN NOT. He has a record and memory of his impotence, of that
impotence he felt shortly after birth. And the worst thing is that this record has never been seriously
questioned again. Never ... ever ... tried to test his strength again ...

Cuando yo era niña me encantaban los circos, y lo que más me gustaba de los circos eran los
animales. A mí me llamaba la atención un gran elefante. Durante la función, la enorme bestia hacia
despliegue de su tamaño, peso y fuerza... pero después de su actuación el elefante quedaba sujeto
por una cadena que aprisionaba una de sus patas a una pequeña estaca en el suelo. Sin embargo, la
estaca era solo un pequeño pedazo de madera enterrado a unos centímetros en la tierra. Y aunque
la cadena era gruesa y poderosa ese animal capaz de arrancar un árbol con su propia fuerza, podía
con facilidad arrancar la estaca y huir. El misterio es evidente: ¿Qué lo mantiene entonces? ¿Por qué
el elefante no huye? Pregunté entonces a algún maestro, a algún padre, o a algún tío por el misterio
del elefante. Alguno de ellos me explicó que el elefante no se escapaba porque estaba amaestrado.
Hice entonces la pregunta obvia: -Si está amaestrado, ¿por qué lo encadenan? No recuerdo haber
recibido ninguna respuesta coherente. Con el tiempo me olvide del misterio del elefante y la
estaca... Hace algunos años descubrí por suerte a alguien que había encontrado la respuesta: El
elefante del circo no se escapa porque ha estado atado a una estaca desde muy pequeño. Cerré los
ojos y me imaginé al pequeño recién nacido sujeto a la estaca. Estoy seguro de que en aquel
momento el elefantito empujó, tiró, sudó, tratando de escapar y no pudo. La estaca era muy fuerte
para él. Estoy seguro que se durmió agotado y que al día siguiente volvió a probar, y también al otro
y al que le seguía... Hasta que un día, un terrible día para su historia, el animal aceptó su impotencia
y se resignó a su destino. Este elefante enorme y poderoso, que vemos en el circo, no se escapa
porque cree que NO PUEDE. Él tiene registro y recuerdo de su impotencia, de aquella impotencia
que sintió poco después de nacer. Y lo peor es que jamás se ha vuelto a cuestionar seriamente ese
registro. Jamás... jamás... intentó poner a prueba su fuerza otra vez...
