✔ The British Isles lie off the north-western coast of the European shore.
✔ Two main islands – Great Britain and Ireland, – are separated by Saint George's
Channel, the Irish Sea and the North Channel.
✔ The Isle of Wight lies off the southern shore of England in the English Channel.
✔ The Isles of Scilly lie off the south-western shore of England offshore of Cornwall.
✔ The Isle of Man lies in the Irish Sea further north from the Anglesey.
✔ The Hebrides lie off north-western shore of Scotland. There are Inner Hebrides and
Outer Hebrides.
Highland Britain.
Great Britain
The borderline between them is roughly a line from the mouth of river Exe in Devonshire, to the
mouth of the Tyne on the north-est coast.
✔ Scotland:
1) North-West and Central Highlands (Grampians) – Highlands are divided by the Great
Glen (the Loch Ness).
- 300 peaks over 900 m;
- Ben Nevis, 1343 m – the tallest peak, locates in Grampians;
2) Southern Uplands – rounded hills stretching towards the border with England (the
Border Country), many rivers.
Rivers: the Tay (-Tummer), the Forth, the Tweed river.
Lakes: Loch Ness.
✔ Wales:
- mainly highland, 1/5 of the landscape is National Park – glaciated peaks, lakes of
Snowdonia (the highest peak – Snowdon, 1085 m), flat-topped plateaux of the Brecon
Beacons – south, Cader Iris and Berwin Range – centre, plateaux are often broken by
deep valleys created by rivers Dee, Wye, Severn, etc. The Cambrian Mountains.
Rivers: the Dee, the Wye, the Severn, the Clwyd, the Conwy, the Usk, the Tywi, the
Dwyryd, the Mawddach.
Lakes: the Lake Bala.

Lowland Britain.
Great Britain
The borderline between them is roughly a line from the mouth of river Exe in Devonshire, to the

Central Lowlands – 1/5 of the land area, 3/4 of the Scottish population.
Rivers: the Clyde.
Lakes: Loch Lomond.
✔ Wales:
- the lowland zones – industrial south Wales, 2/3 of the Welsh population lives there.
England mainly undulating or flat lowland countryside

- the North Yorkshire Moors, the limestone Cotswolds, the chalk North and South Downs,
the Chiltern Hills.
- uplands: Pennines, Peak District, Lake District, Scafell Pike (978 m), the Cumbrian
Mountains, the Cheviot Hills, the Yorkshire dales; Cornwall peninsula – Exmoor and
Dartmoor.
Rivers: the Thames, the Severn, the Tyne, the Wear, the Tees, the Mersey, the Trent(-
Humber), the Great (or Bedford) Ouse, the Bristol Avon.
Lakes: The Lake District – Windermere, Ullswater, Derwentwater, Conistonwater.
