Planned Ritual – Forgiveness

Welcome: Today we are celebrating that the forgiveness of God is unlimited. When we
receive forgiveness from God, we are encouraged to act in the same way to others around
us.

Sign of the cross:

In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Introductory Rites:
Processional Hymn:
Forgive our Sins as we Forgive - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HixCQUirJxg

Penitential Rite:
Lord Jesus, you have shown us the mercy of the Father.
Lord, have mercy.
Lord Jesus, you have shown us the obedience of a son.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord Jesus, you promised us forgiveness without limits.
Lord, have mercy.

Gloria:
Glory to God in the highest. And on earth peace to men of good will. We praise You. We
bless You. We adore you. We glorify You. We give You thanks for Your great glory. O Lord
God, heavenly King, God the Father almighty. O Lord Jesus Christ, the Only-begotten Son. O
Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father: you Who take away the sins of the world, have
mercy on us. You Who take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. You Who sit at
the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are holy. You alone are the
Lord. You alone, O Jesus Christ, are most high. Together with the Holy Spirit in the glory of
God the Father.
Amen.

Opening Prayer:
Let us pray.
Lord, in your love and mercy welcome us back to you and free us from our sin.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Liturgy of the Word:

First Reading:
2 Corinthians 5:17-19
A reading from the second letter of St Paul to the Corinthians.
When anyone is joined to Christ, he is a new being; the old is gone, the new has come. All
this is done by God, who through Christ changed us from enemies into his friends and gave
us the task of making others his friends also. Our message is that God was making all
mankind his friends through Christ. God did not keep an account of their sins, and he has
given us the message which tells how he makes them his friends.
The word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm:
Psalm 51:7-10
Response: We will be white than snow.
Remove my sin, and I will be clean;
Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. R.

Let me hear the sounds of joy and gladness;

And though you have crushed me and broken me,
I will be happy again. R.

Close your eyes to my sins and wipe out all my evil

Create a pure heart in me, O God,
And put a new and loyal spirit in me. R.

Gospel Acclamation:
Alleluia, alleluia!
“This son of mine was dead but now he is alive”.
Alleluia!

Gospel:
Luke 15:17-24
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke.
Jesus said, “At last the younger son came to his sense and said, “All my father’s hired
workers have more than they can eat, and here I am about to starve! I will get up and go to
my father and say, Father, I have sinned against God and against you. I am no longer fit to
be called your son; treat me as one of your hired workers.’ So he got up and started back to
his father.

“He was still a long way from home when his father saw him; his heart was filled with pity,
and he ran, threw his arms around his son, and kissed him. ‘Father’, the son said, ‘I have
sinned against God and against you. I am no longer fit to be called your son.’ But the father
called his servants. ‘Hurry!’ he said. ‘Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his
finger and shoes on his feet. Then go and get the prize calf and kill it, and let us celebrate
with a feast! For this son of mine was dead, but now he is alive; he was lost, but now he has
been found.’ And so the feasting began.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

Homily Notes:
• Concentrate on the Gospel. Note the imagery:
• Feasting, partying, fine clothes. Paint the picture well: dirty filthy son, so despised
and so depressed, now hugged by his father, cleaned up, nice clothes, fine food.
• We have become God’s friends even more – we can love a lot because we have been
forgiven a lot.

General Intercessions:
1. May those who feel lost and lonely find new peace. Let us pray to the Lord.
2. May those who are afraid come to know God as a true friend. Let us pray to the
Lord.
- Our God is always ready to forgive us and to help us in our need. Let us now pray to
him.
- Father, hear the prayers we make today with faith, through Christ our Lord.
