Weekly Schedule

Week Sections
1 1.1 - 1.5, 2.1
2 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 3.1
3 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 4,1, 4,2
4 4.4, 4.5, 5.2, 5.3

6 7.1, 7.2, 7.3

Learning Objectives: By completing this course, students will

1. have a deep understanding of the notions of limits, continuity, differentiability,
and integrability of functions of a single real variable;
2. be able to devise and write out solutions (proofs) of problems in a coherent style;
3. know the fundamental theorems of single variable real analysis.

Homework: Assignments for a given week are usually to be handed in at the end of
the class the following Tuesday, with appropriate adjustments for holidays. The exact
due dates of the homework will be specified with each assignment. Besides hand-in
assignments, practice problems will also be given. Do not hand these in. It is
impossible to do well in a course like this without solving a substantial number of
problems. Late homework will not be accepted except for extraordinary reasons.
Unexcused late or missing papers count as zero. You are expected to do at least 12
hours of homework weekly.

Exams: There will be a midterm and a final. All exams will be closed book and no
calculators.

NOTE: THE FINAL EXAM IS GIVEN ON THE FINAL DAY OF CLASS, JUNE 27.

Grading Policy: Homework: 20%. Midterm: 35%. Final: 45%.

Absence policy: Attendance is not part of your final grade, but regular attendance
is important to learn the material well. If you must be away from class when an exam
is to be given, contact me before the exam and explain the reason for your intended
absence. You will not be allowed to take a makeup exam unless you have a
valid reason and suitable documentation is presented to me before the exam.

In-class rules: During lectures cell phones must be switched off and laptops
asleep. Students, however, should try to remain awake.
University Policy on Religious Holidays:
Students should notify me during the first week of the semester of their intention to
be absent from class on their day(s) of religious observance.
