DOC. TITLE SHORT−CIRCUIT RATING CALCULATIONS FOR XL1/0500C132.CLVG

Issued by : aminudi Date : 23−Apr−2019 Revision No. 0 Sheet No. 1 of 3

The short−circuit rating is initially calculated assuming heat generated is retained

within the metallic component (i.e. adiabatic) using the following equation ;

i ²t = K²S² x ln ((ãf + ß)/(ãi + ß)) ...(1)

Where ;

i = adiabatic short circuit current (A)

t = duration of short circuit (s)
S = area of metallic component (mm²)
ãi = initial short circuit temperature (°C)
ãf = final short circuit temperature (°C)
K,ß = constants for metallic component

Component; K ß S ãi ãf i(3.0) i(5.0)

Phase Conductor 226.0 234.5 500.0 90.0 250 41305 31994
Copper Wire 226.0 234.5 371.7 75.0 200 28245 21878
Copper Tape 226.0 234.5 1.5 75.0 200 114 88
Aluminium Foil 148.0 228.0 53.0 75.0 200 2664 2063

When heat transfer from the metallic component into adjacent materials is considered,
the initial rating calculated as above is corrected by multiplying the rating
with a "non−adiabatic" factor (Ñ) of the component (ref. IEC 60949:1988).

For conductors, the factor Ñ is derived as follows ;

Ñ(t) = sqrt [(1 + F x A x sqrt(t/s) + F² x B x (t/s)] ...(2)

A = (C1/þc) x sqrt(þe/øe) ; C1 = 2464 mm/m
B = (C2/þc) x (þe/øe) ; C2 = 1.22 K.m.sqmm/J

For tape(s), metallic sheath and wire armour ;

Ñ(t) = 1 + 0.61(M sqrt(t)) − 0.069(M sqrt(t))² + 0.0043(M sqrt(t))³

...(3)
M = 0.7 x (sqrt(þi/øi) + sqrt(þe/øe)) / 2 x þc x tm x 0.001

Where ;

F = 0.7, factor for imperfect thermal contact

A,B,M = empirical constants calculated as above
þc = specific heat of metallic component (J/Km³)
þi,þe = specific heat of inner &exterior coverings (J/Km³)
øi,øe = thermal resistivity of inner &exterior coverings (K.m/W)

For non−adiabatic rating of spaced wire screens, the non−adiabatic rating

of each wire is multiplied by the number of wires to obtain the full
short−circuit current using the following equations ;

I(t) = i(t) x Ñ(t) x n ..(4)

Ñ(t) = sqrt[ 1 + F x A x sqrt (t/s) + F² x B x (t/s) ] ..(5)
A = (C1/þc) x sqrt(þm/øm) ; C1 = 2464 mm/m
B = (C2/þc) x (þm/øm) ; C2 = 1.22 Km.sqmm/J

Where ;

I = non−adiabatic rating for total screen (Amps)

i = adiabatic ratings for one wire (Amps)
Ñ = non−adiabatic factor
n = total number of wires ( 70)
t = duration of short circuit (sec)
F = 0.5 factor for wires "not fully embedded"
A,B = empirical constants of coverings
C1,C2 = calculation constants as stipulated
s = area of one wire (mm²)
þc = specific heat of metallic medium (J/Km³)
þm = ave. specific heat of coverings (J/Km³)
øm = ave. thermal resistivity of coverings (K.m/W)

Thus, for Copper Wire screen ;

s = (2.60/2) x (2.60/2) x 3.14159 => 5.309 sqmm

þm = ( 2400000+ 2400000)/2 => 2400000 J/Km³
øm = (3.5 + 3.5)/2 => 3.5 K.m/W
A = (2464 / 3450000) x 828.078 => .5914 −−
B = (1.22 / 3450000) x 685714 => .2425 −−
i(3.0) = sqrt(1439760 x .339237 / 3.0) => 403.5 A/3.0s
Ñ(3.0) = sqrt(1 +.2222826 + .03425) => 1.1210 −−
I(3.0) = 403.5 x 1.1210 x 70 => 31661 A/3.0s
i(5.0) = sqrt(1439760 x .339237 / 5.0) => 312.5 A/5.0s
Ñ(5.0) = sqrt(1 +.2869656 + .05709) => 1.1593 −−
I(5.0) = 312.5 x 1.1593 x 70 => 25364 A/5.0s

For non−adiabatic rating of spaced wire screens, the non−adiabatic rating

of each wire is multiplied by the number of wires to obtain the full
short−circuit current using the following equations ;

I(t) = i(t) x Ñ(t) x n ..(4)

Ñ(t) = sqrt[ 1 + F x A x sqrt (t/s) + F² x B x (t/s) ] ..(5)
A = (C1/þc) x sqrt(þm/øm) ; C1 = 2464 mm/m
B = (C2/þc) x (þm/øm) ; C2 = 1.22 Km.sqmm/J

Where ;

I = non−adiabatic rating for total screen (Amps)

i = adiabatic ratings for one wire (Amps)
Ñ = non−adiabatic factor
n = total number of wires ( 63)
t = duration of short circuit (sec)
F = 0.5 factor for wires "not fully embedded"
A,B = empirical constants of coverings

s = area of one wire (mm²)
þc = specific heat of metallic medium (J/Km³)
þm = ave. specific heat of coverings (J/Km³)
øm = ave. thermal resistivity of coverings (K.m/W)

Thus, for Copper Wire screen ;

B = (1.22 / 3450000) x 685714 => .2425 −−

DOC. TITLE SHORT−CIRCUIT RATING CALCULATIONS FOR XL1/1000A33.CLDG

Issued by : aminudi Date : 23−Apr−2019 Revision No. 0 Sheet No. 1 of 3

The short−circuit rating is initially calculated assuming heat generated is retained

within the metallic component (i.e. adiabatic) using the following equation ;

i ²t = K²S² x ln ((ãf + ß)/(ãi + ß)) ...(1)

Where ;

i = adiabatic short circuit current (A)

t = duration of short circuit (s)
S = area of metallic component (mm²)
ãi = initial short circuit temperature (°C)
ãf = final short circuit temperature (°C)
K,ß = constants for metallic component

Component; K ß S ãi ãf i(1.0) i(3.0)

Phase Conductor 148.0 228.0 1000.0 90.0 250 94484 54550
Copper Wire 226.0 234.5 261.7 75.0 200 34455 19892
Copper Tape 226.0 234.5 1.5 75.0 200 197 114
Aluminium Foil 148.0 228.0 45.0 75.0 200 3918 2262

When heat transfer from the metallic component into adjacent materials is considered,
the initial rating calculated as above is corrected by multiplying the rating
with a "non−adiabatic" factor (Ñ) of the component (ref. IEC 60949:1988).

For conductors, the factor Ñ is derived as follows ;

Ñ(t) = sqrt [(1 + F x A x sqrt(t/s) + F² x B x (t/s)] ...(2)

A = (C1/þc) x sqrt(þe/øe) ; C1 = 2464 mm/m
B = (C2/þc) x (þe/øe) ; C2 = 1.22 K.m.sqmm/J

For tape(s), metallic sheath and wire armour ;

Ñ(t) = 1 + 0.61(M sqrt(t)) − 0.069(M sqrt(t))² + 0.0043(M sqrt(t))³

...(3)
M = 0.7 x (sqrt(þi/øi) + sqrt(þe/øe)) / 2 x þc x tm x 0.001

Where ;

F = 0.7, factor for imperfect thermal contact

A,B,M = empirical constants calculated as above
þc = specific heat of metallic component (J/Km³)
þi,þe = specific heat of inner &exterior coverings (J/Km³)
øi,øe = thermal resistivity of inner &exterior coverings (K.m/W)

For non−adiabatic rating of spaced wire screens, the non−adiabatic rating

of each wire is multiplied by the number of wires to obtain the full
short−circuit current using the following equations ;

I(t) = i(t) x Ñ(t) x n ..(4)

Ñ(t) = sqrt[ 1 + F x A x sqrt (t/s) + F² x B x (t/s) ] ..(5)
A = (C1/þc) x sqrt(þm/øm) ; C1 = 2464 mm/m
B = (C2/þc) x (þm/øm) ; C2 = 1.22 Km.sqmm/J

Where ;

I = non−adiabatic rating for total screen (Amps)

i = adiabatic ratings for one wire (Amps)
Ñ = non−adiabatic factor
n = total number of wires ( 63)
t = duration of short circuit (sec)
F = 0.5 factor for wires "not fully embedded"
A,B = empirical constants of coverings
C1,C2 = calculation constants as stipulated
s = area of one wire (mm²)
þc = specific heat of metallic medium (J/Km³)
þm = ave. specific heat of coverings (J/Km³)
øm = ave. thermal resistivity of coverings (K.m/W)

Thus, for Copper Wire screen ;

s = (2.30/2) x (2.30/2) x 3.14159 => 4.155 sqmm

þm = ( 2400000+ 2400000)/2 => 2400000 J/Km³
øm = (3.5 + 3.5)/2 => 3.5 K.m/W
A = (2464 / 3450000) x 828.078 => .5914 −−
B = (1.22 / 3450000) x 685714 => .2425 −−
i(1.0) = sqrt( 881674 x .339237 / 1.0) => 546.9 A/1.0s
Ñ(1.0) = sqrt(1 +.1450742 + .01459) => 1.0769 −−
I(1.0) = 546.9 x 1.0769 x 63 => 37103 A/1.0s
i(3.0) = sqrt( 881674 x .339237 / 3.0) => 315.8 A/3.0s
Ñ(3.0) = sqrt(1 +.2512760 + .04377) => 1.1380 −−
I(3.0) = 315.8 x 1.1380 x 63 => 22638 A/3.0s
