ApjPrint UFPort Handout
ApjPrint UFPort Handout
In uniFLOW there are two possibilities for detecting print jobs inside the spooler. The ApjPrint print
processor and the uniFLOW Port (MOM Port). In any normal installation of uniFLOW, the APJ Print is
automatically installed and – as soon as a printer is configured in uniFLOW – WinPrint in the Printer
Driver is replaced by the ApjPrint Print Processor. With the uniFLOW Port the original print processor
of the printer can be kept, allowing detecting, processing and accounting of print jobs while using
non‐standard print processors.
The two different print job detecting methods can be selected and enabled in the printer wizards
Accounting only and Accounting with cost center selection via the parameter Monitor Jobs. Here you
can either choose via Apj Print Print Processor or via uniFLOW Port.
The reason why the uniFLOW Port has been implemented in the software is, that in some situations
there can be accounting problems when using certain printer drivers.
Let’s have a closer look at how a print job finds its way from spooler to printer:

So if for certain HP printers, we remove the original HP Print Processor from the Spooler
configuration and – for accounting reasons – configure the ApjPrint instead, with certain printers
some finishing options go astray in the process (for instance duplex is not possible anymore). For the
user this is of course not acceptable, so we had to find a solution here.
As the use of ApjPrint was not possible in these cases, we build the job detection functionality into
the uniFLOW Port. With this we are ‐ on the one hand ‐ able to use the original HP Print Processor so
no finishing options get lost. On the other hand we have the opportunity to analyse the print job –
now at some other point in the spooler – and receive the accounting data we need.
With the uniFLOW Port we are independent of the application of the ApjPrint Print Processor and are
able to support virtually every possible Print Processor. However, as a rule we recommend to use the
uniFLOW Port only for the mentioned HP Print Processors that cause problems in practice and use
ApjPrint in all other cases.
Note:
Important to know is that the uniFLOW Printer Port forwards print jobs to the printer ONLY via TCP
Port 9100. This is the port that has been officially registered at the IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers
Authority) for the communication of PDL print data. In other words, with the uniFLOW Port it is not
possible to print via USB, LPR or LPT. If this is needed, you should use the normal ApjPrint Print
Processor.
Note:
Concerning accounting format: if the uniFLOW Port is used, only the RAW data format is possible. This
can be seen in the graph, when the uniFLOW Port starts analysing the spool file, the print job already
has been converted from GDI Meta file format into the RAW data of a PDL.
