Origins of the Term “Photography”
● The word "photography" was created from the Greek roots φωτός (phōtos),
genitive of φῶς (phōs), "light" and γραφή (graphé)
● The word means "representation by means of lines" or "drawing", together
meaning"drawing with light"

Earliest Known Photography
● The world’s first photograph was taken by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce in 1826
or 1827
● Photography began in remote antiquity with the discovery of two critical
principles camera obscura image projection and the observation that some
substances are visibly altered by exposure to light
Daguerreotype (1839-1860)
● The first commercially successful Photography
● Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre is the inventor of Daguerreotype.
● The Daguerreotype is accurate, detailed and sharp.
● Since the metal plate is extremely vulnerable, most Daguerreotypes have to
be presented in a special housing.
● Daguerreotypes were very expensive
Calotype(1841)
● It was invented by William Henry Fox Talbot of Great Britain in the 1830s.
● It is an early photographic process in which negatives were made using paper
coated with silver iodide.
● In this technique, a sheet of paper coated with silver chloride was exposed to
light in a camera obscura
Wet Collodion Process(1851)
● Wet-collodion process, also called collodion process, early photographic
technique invented by Englishman Frederick Scott Archer in 1851.
● The process involved adding a soluble iodide to a solution of collodion
(cellulose nitrate) and coating a glass plate with the mixture
Color Photography(1861)
● Color photography is photography that uses media capable of reproducing
color
● The first color photograph made by the three-color method suggested by
James Clerk Maxwell, in 1855, but was taken in 1861 by Thomas Sutton.

Dry Plate Photography(1871)
● It was invented by R.L. Maddox in 1871
● It was a glass plate coated with a gelatin emulsion of silver bromide
Kodak Roll Film Camera(1888)
● George Eastman invented flexible roll film and in 1888 introduced the Kodak
camera shown to use this film
● Being able to take 100-exposure rolls of film that gave circular images 2 5/8"
in diameter.

Kodachrome Film (1935)
● Kodachrome film was created by Eastman Kodak Company.
● It is a color reversal film, and is the first successful color material
● First to be able to capture a color image had to deal with heavy glass plates,
tripods, long exposures and an exacting development procedure.
Polaroid Instant Photography (1940’s)
● Made by scientist and inventor Edwin Land
● The original Land Model 95 used two separate positive and negative rolls,
which enabled the photograph to be developed inside the camera.
● Polaroid manufactured 60 copies of the Land Camera for the Christmas
holiday.
First Digital Camera(1975)
● Steven J. Sasson invented the world’s first digital camera while working at
Eastman Kodak in 1975.
● Weighing about 8 pounds

● Created by Nikon
