Single-Sex Education
Former president of South Africa Nelson Mandela believes that it doesn't matter if people
are separated into the same sex classroom, he said “Education is the most powerful weapon we
can use to change the world”. Mr. Mandela is right that education is the most powerful weapon
we can use to change the world, and it's time that the district and the school board see that they
shouldn’t make same sex classrooms. Is affo correct should they expand single-sex education?
There shouldn’t be same sex classrooms because the sex of the classroom doesn't matter, studies
are inconclusive about how helpful separating gender really is, and girls mature faster, so
Single sex classroom genders should not matter . According to Affo, that
if the classrooms are separated by gender their will be a higher graduation rate.
Eventually, their is a possibility that it will be hard for students to assimilate into
"mixed gender" society later on in life. In other words this is saying that if the
genders are split later on in life they could become socially awkward and not
want to interact with the other gender in any activities. This is important because
then the genders would not end up together and they wouldn't be able to solve
(Ortega2)
some world problems. This proves that the genders are better together then
separating
the genders will not help. “ Teachers were directed to create 'competitive,
high-energy' classrooms for boys and 'cooperative, quiet' classrooms for girls, but
this didn't work out.” In other words this means that segregated classrooms
wouldn't work out because the students would have a hard time paying attention if the classroom
doesn't have a wide diversity. This is important because the classrooms didn't really work out.
This proves that student would have a harder time learning with segregated classrooms because
they are already used to what they were being taught in class.
However ,segregated classrooms have some good reasoning. On the other hand, some
believe that males lower the education rates of females because men often bother the other sex in
class which distracts them from learning. However, the fact remains that segregated classrooms
don’t really work and that students will still learn at the same rate.
Same sex classrooms shouldn’t exist because the sex of the classroom doesn't matter,
studies are inconclusive about how helpful separating gender really is, and girls mature faster, so
potentially boys won't hold them back. Nelson Mandela has a valid point that education can
