-In 1995 at Stanford university

 Surgey Brin first met the Larry page in summer at 1995.
 Surgey Brin was a second year grad student in computer science department at
Stanford university.
 When page showed up at Stanford a few month later, he began searching for a topic
for his doctoral thesis. It was an important decision for him.
 These two bright students came up with an idea to create a universal search engine
that would compare internet sites by the relationships between them and other sites on
the World Wide Web.
In 1996,Page and Brin originally nicknamed their new search engine “Backrub”,
because the system checked back links to estimate the importance of a site
 Eventually, they change the name to “Google” in 1997 which was from the
misspelling of the name googol, which means the number 1 followed by 100 zeros.
 Google originally started running at the university’s domain google.stanford.edu
Nowadays Google is currently most popular search engine.
• It is more popular Ads

1998: Larry Page and Sergey Brin start to show investors their novel search engine,
Google, which ranks search results based on links back to individual pages, rather than
keywords. Their project, initially called BackRub, garners interest from four angel investors
in 1998
2004: In 2004 Google began offering a free Web-based e-mail account. One of the main
appeals of Gmail was that it gave users an e-mail address that was independent of any
particular Internet service provider (ISP), thus making it easier to maintain a permanent
address
2006: In January 2005 Google launched Google Video . A few months later Google began
accepting user-submitted videos, with submitters setting the prices for others to
download and view the videos. For all of its marketing advantages, however, Google was
unable to overtake the upstart leader in online videos, YouTube.
2011: Google was late to recognize the popularity and advertising potential of social
networks such as Facebook and Twitter. Its first attempt to create a social network,
Google Buzz, started in 2010 and closed less than two years later. Among several
problems, the network was limited to users who had Gmail accounts, and it created
privacy issues by featuring a default setting that showed a user’s profile to anyone. Even
before Google Buzz had shut down, the company launched Google+ in June 2011

Google’s primary corporate strategy was related diversification. Google achieved

its diversification strategy through corporate entrepreneurship and innovation
and acquisi- tions. This enabled Google to increase its offerings and decrease its
competition. As the industry leader, Google used offensive strategies by constant
innovation of its product lines and expansion into other industries like mobile
phones, maps, blogging, news, health, etc.
Google provided internet users with the most relevant search results on as many
topics as possible. This included going international to outsource and expand
markets by pro- viding its products in foreign languages. Google’s business level
strategy was a broad differentiation strategy, because it offered features that other
search engines did not, such as translating from one language into another, while

still providing the most relevant search results.

Google Earth is a virtual globe, map and geographical information program that was
originally called Earth Viewer 3D, and was created by Keyhole, Inc, a company acquired
by Google in 2004. By offering the ability to place this information in combination on a
three-dimensional model of the Earth, it can facilitate understanding of the Earth system.

discussion in the classroom
 Google Earth is easy to use and presents, in a visual geospatial context, a great
deal of information that applies to topics that are addressed in geoscience
courses and many other educational settings
