Final Idea
The radio drama starts with the sound of the rain on the background,
followed by running footsteps and heavy breathing. Harry and Caleb decide
to find the end of the rainbow to confirm for themselves if the legend of the
treasure is true and to find out what was the reason of their friend's silence
whenever the topic was brought up. The boys follow the rainbow and end up
in the middle of a sombre forest, following a path covered in leaves. At the
end of the path they notice that the rainbow goes inside the hollow of a tree
and they took a look at it, seeing that the tree is actually empty inside and
there is a tunnel that goes underground. They decide to go inside of it, as the
hollow is large enough for a person to fit in and starts crawl into the tunnel.
When they get there one of them is able to see mythical creatures like fairies
and elves, while the other one sees an empty cave surrounded by nothing.
Later on in the plot the one who's able to see the magical things in the cave
starts speaking with a fairy, who was also the guardian of the cave. (The
cave is actually one of the entrances of a parallel world). After h speaks with
the fairy he decides to remain in the parallel world, to explore it more and
also find out the truth behind his past.
Competitions
The principal commissioning process for Radio is run by each network through
one or more commissioning rounds per year.
There are some programmes/strands that are commissioned outside these
rounds:
BBC Sounds
BBC Radio 1 & Radio 1Xtra
BBC Radio 2
BBC Radio 3
BBC Radio 4 & Radio 4 Extra
There are four briefs in this round which is a rolling one with no closing dates
for proposal:
Commissioning Brief 103005: Funny, Quirky Odd
Commissioning Brief 103004: Dramatic Storytelling
Commissioning Brief 103003: Discover, Explain
Commissioning Brief 103002: Pop Cultures, Sub Cultures
The commission I'm going to join is 'Dramatic Storytelling' because it's based
on stories in fiction and non-fiction (drama). Through these podcasts
commissions I'll be able to tell stories over long story arcs, tackling complex
subjects and character in depth. Because the genre of my radio drama is
fantasy, this commission will allow me to explore it more because I'll be able
to create my own podcast series and improve the complexity of my idea.
About BBC Sounds Podcasts
BBC Sounds is at the focal point of the BBC's advanced listening experience,
re-concocting and developing BBC Radio and Music. Made in light of the
today's world of on-request content furthermore, sound spilling, the
application will change the manner in which crowds find and make the most
of our output. It plans to give individuals, particularly more youthful audience
members, and the best in engaging, experimental and profoundly
imaginative audio. Our podcast commissions’ bonuses for BBC Sounds will be
particular and will serve that more youthful group of onlookers who are now
bound to listen online and on-request.
While taking a look at the standards imposed by BBC, the first and the most
important thing would be the quality of the idea. Without a good idea or an
idea that isn't complex enough the podcasts can't happen because the
commissions requires high standards and a plot that will get the attention of
their listener, bringing in a huge audience. When it comes to my idea I'l have
to research more the target audience by making surveys and focus groups,
where I'll ask if my idea is suitable for a target audience aged 20-35, and if is
not what should I change or improve so that it will fit between their standards.
I noticed that most of BBC's podcasts are more focused on the thriller,
comedy, sci-fi and horror as their main genres. Compared to these, the genre
of my radio drama will be fantasy, which I think is pretty out-
standing and out of the box, as many people are more focused
on podcasts like true crime thrillers, so bringing something
different will get listeners interest and attention. I also think it's
pretty diverse when it comes to the target audience's age, as I
believe the young generation might get interested as well. As
the genre of the radio drama is fantasy, I'll be able to extend the plot of my
idea and make it more complex as the fantasy genre covers many elements
that would help me make these improvements.
Proposal
The main title I came up with for my radio drama is 'At The End Of The
Rainbow', as it's very simple and it already gives the audience an idea about
where the main action is going to take place and from my perspective this
will be the ideal title for my radio drama because it's easy to remember and I
feel is going to be more appealing to the audience. The second and third
titles I came up with are ‘The myth of the rainbow’ and ‘Journey to the end.’
This is a story about two childhood friends, Caleb and Jason, who wants to
find out if the suburban myth of the treasure at the end of the rainbow is
real.
All criteria must be met (outlines in the following pages) for you to pass
You will work on the re-submissions after each section and NOT at the
end. As soon as a section is completed, there will be no going back to
it.
Although all teachers are guiding you, you must always go to your
‘marking teacher’ for grades and written feedback (all teachers can
guide and feedback verbally during lessons however)
For you to gain the highest grade possible you will be required to work
outside your 11 lessons and be in on Wednesday afternoons
Resubmissions for each section may be done on Wednesdays so you
will be required to attend in order to pass / improve
Group work is permitted but only as pairs (with extra rules for groups)
A deadline is a deadline – you are marked on your professionalism so
late submissions will go against your grade
You will sign ‘hand in’ forms so we can track who has kept
to each deadline
You will be required to sign a letter of authenticity (to state
all work is your own)
There can be no extensions as this work is submitted to the
exam board and if it is not there on deadline day they will
fail it
If you are filming off campus, the marking teacher must approve
BEFORE you are allowed to go and the filming days must match your
production schedule.
Actors must be part of the course or have signed a declaration to say
they will be at the filming location – ‘no show actors’ will not be
allowed as an excuse
Target Audience
Final Deadline
7th May Evaluation / Submission for interim
deadline.
