Bulkley News: Jason leaves for Iraq on June 25th (his birthday). Actually they don't go
straight to Iraq, but that is when he leaves SLC. Nicole is scheduled to have the baby (a boy) on
August 24th and so we are praying that Jason will be able to come home and be here for the
Maddox is doing ok. He's been fighting ear infections almost continuously since March.
So he's scheduled for tubes and a couple of other procedures for June 23rd, as long as he's
not sick. If he's sick they won't put him under anesthesia, so please keep him in your
prayers. His heart is doing well though, so we are very grateful for that.
Sorensen news:
Because Kent and I just celebrated our 40th anniversary, Mary asked if I'd write a
few things about those years and maybe about our wedding day.
Recently I was on my service mission at temple square - stationed where the brides and
grooms come out of the temple to greet their waiting family and friends. They are all so
beautifully dressed, so happy and full of hopes and dreams for a perfect life.. After one
couple walked out the door, the temple worker at the desk remarked, "If they only knew
what was ahead . . ." We all laughed because we knew exactly what he meant. As I look
back over 40 years of marriage - it is kind of funny to think back on how it all started and
what has taken place in our lives over those years. You really don't know what lies ahead
- the ups and downs, happy times, challenging times - how life will take so many twists
and turns. When people ask for marriage and family advice, I feel reluctant to say
anything, because truly the older I get, the less I know. Life has so many variables and
people and situations are all so different. That's why "doing everything the Lord's way"
and "holding on to the iron rod" is really the only common factor that holds us all
together and moves us forward. (Did that even make sense?) Kent and I have had a
wonderful life together with our family being the greatest blessing of all. Looking back
to our wedding day, we had a memorable event that maybe my sisters will remember
(but Kimo was only 7), We were going to the Lion House for the wedding luncheon
when Pres. Joseph Fielding Smith came walking by (no body guards or fuss in those
days). Since Grandma Moody knew him well - she called him over to introduce us and
explained that we had just been married in the SL Temple. He took my hand, looked
Kent in the eye and said, "If he's not good to you . . . he'll answer to me!" And Kent has
lived up to this charge - he's always been so good to me!

crazy experiences. Justin continues to rip his pants on a regular basis and says they are
all now put together with duct tape. When he went back to Georgia (first of Feb.) we got
him new pants - so they've only lasted 4 months. What are we going to do with this
guy! We are excited to see Elder Bytheway (Trish's son Aaron) in a couple of weeks.
He has worked a lot with Justin and will be returning home in 10 days. Here's Justin's
latest email:
Hi everyone,
The Millers didn't end up being baptized. (The husband went crazy and he is now
running from the police - he’s been trying to catch the family, for what purpose
who knows? They have been kind of on the run just trying to avoid him - so we
are giving them some time for life to calm down a bit.
We traveled officially about 2,900 miles this month!
Had a pistol pulled on us.
Met countless preachers, ministers and pastors this week.
We were threatened a few times by some angry baptists (haha)
Met some wonderful families (Mcgees, Currys, and McFarlands)
Found a massive spider I had in my helmet all day ( like quarter size body)
Made wedding plans for Sis. Baily so she can be baptized this week
And last of all - a million people talked to us -I rode my unicycle all week out in
Sylvester and everyone was asking what we were doing.
Had interviews with President Bowman
Gave a talk in church Sunday
Hopefully that gives you a good idea of what is going on here. I am looking forward to
having another good week! I’ve been reading everyday a chapter from the Bible and
Book of Mormon - I just don't see how you can separate the two? I need both to be able
to gain any kind of understanding of many of the doctrines. So many people here say just
- Jake has been in Italy for 2 weeks with friends and then went to visit Jodi, Christian and
their family in Germany for this week. (Ahhh... the life of a bachelor)
- We're excited for Jessie/ Aaron and girls & Jared/Jamie and family to come for a visit
this summer.
- Our oldest grandson, Spence, just turned 12 and is receiving the Aaronic Priesthood this
Sunday.
- Jenny and David blessed their beautiful baby "El Patrica" last week. (It was awesome!)
That's our #26.
- Birthdays in May: Jill, Derek, Eden, Max, Jane, Heidi and Spence. June birthdays are:
Hanna, Olivia and Aaron.
Last but not least - Josh's graduation!!! We are excited for him to move on to the
next stage of life or maybe I should say we are excited to move on to the next stage of
life. (ha ha) He's had a very good year: Sterling Scholar, Miner of the Month, "Pick"
award for service to the school, athletic service award, honor roll (3.75 GPA) with a 4.0
this past quarter, Duty to God Award, Eagle Scout, Seminary (all A's for 4 years) Most
important, he's a good kid who tries hard to do what's right. We love you Josh. He has
an academic tuition scholarship to UVU - but still hoping that the BYU football one will
come through. For those who don't know, he has a scholarship to help with football
information, but his ACT was too low so we can't get him admitted. The football director

His hands, those He touches are uplifted and become greater, stronger, and
better people as a result. If we are His hands, should we not do the same?"

My highlight of this last week was Courtney's baptism. The family that
referred us to her planned all of it! It was so good! They had great
People in the South are super nice and I am trying to get a cute
southern accent but decided mine was sounding like a hillbilly so I
have given up the idea...
White News:
Michael and Young graduated from Springville High School. The both graduated
also from seminary Michael from the traditional 4 years and Young from 2 years. Young
will head for home on the 16th of June and return for school at UVU in Aug. Michael is
looking hard for a job and getting his duck in a row for his mission papers. If he gets a
job he will go to BYUH for a semester and then go on his mission. If it takes a while he
will just work and then go on his mission. Ether way will be good. We are excited for
the Esplin Reunion, but sorry we won't be able to go to the Moody reunion.
Atkinsons:
Our children who are in school are doing great….Greg still will get a scholarship at
BYU this fall….Haylee had all A’s but one B…. And KC got three A’s and two
B’s….very great considering he had some very very hard classes…well all did!
Our family is running the Radnar race this next weekend. They begin in Logan Friday
morning at 5:30 am and end up in Park City on Sat. late afternoon. A total of about 200
miles along the most beautiful scenic route you can find anywhere. (Except maybe
Hawaii). All together (there are twelve runners with three legs each) We follow along
in the car even thru the night often. There are two vans which trade off …one is doing
the runs and the other is taking a break for 6 or more hours until they start again. They
run straight thru the night and it is a lot of fun. Erin and Mary will help drive the vans,
KC, Sadie, Scott, Spencer, Angie and Greg are running plus Jana Went is joining them
this year at the last minute….way to be in shape, Jana. Bryant and Haylee will be the
volunteers they have to provide to help with the race. So it is fun for all of us. Good luck
team.
Erin has found out that she is expecting a girl the end of September…we are excited
for their family! Angie, Ajay and Greg are vacationing with the Whittemore family in
Puerto Rico this week. They are having a fantastic time!! Sadie is officially thru with
her school and internship this next week. Congratulations, Sadie.

From Provo to Canyon Caverns, Arizona it is about a 9-10 hour drive—according to map
quest. Erin thought it might be a little longer. We should leave Provo around 10:00 and
arrive in Canyon Caverns early enough to have dinner and get to bed early. They told me
on the phone that from Canyon Caverns to the start of the hike is about an hour and a half
drive. The hotel is 82$ (total with tax) for 2 double beds and a roll away. There are still
reservations available. Canyon Caverns is not a town but a stopping point on the way to
the start of the hike. It is about 12 miles from Peach Springs. The hotel in Peach Springs
is already full. I have the number if anyone wants it.
Those coming from California and Las Vegas could meet us at the hotel that night or just
meet us at the start of the hike in the morning.
There are other options available as well—let me know if you have other ideas.
Have breakfast
Start the hike around 5 or earlier—before the sun starts hitting us and it gets boiling hot.
Lunch
Things to do:
New Navajo Falls—a new 35 foot falls formed in ’08 with the flood. Walk
behind the falls and jump out through a curtain of falling water into the pool.
The old Navajo Falls was destroyed in the flood of ’08 and I think there may
be two new smaller falls now.
Wake up—Breakfast
Hike to Mooney Falls (½ mile from camp) and Beaver Falls (about 3-4 miles
from Mooney)
I know hiking down to the bottom of Mooney Falls is a little bit scary and
somewhat dangerous because you have to go along the cliff wall down to the
bottom with the help of chains and steps dug into the wall—so many may
not want to do it. We can just walk to Mooney Falls and take pictures, look
around then go back to Havasupai and swim. In order to get to Beaver Falls
you have to hike down Mooney Falls. I have heard it is really fun so we can
decide when we get there if we want to do it. When we hiked down there 25
years ago we didn’t even know about those last two falls. I know Atkinsons
have done it and so have some of my older kids when they were younger—
so we can decide when we get down there. You could also Google
Havasupai and read about it.
If we are ready to leave and don’t feel like we want another day in the canyon we would wake
up 3 or 4 and head back to the top to make sure we aren’t hiking in the heat of the day. Arrive
around 9 or 10 and then drive back to our homes.
or
Breakfast
Enjoy Havasu Falls and we could go into Carbonite Canyon and look for fossils
Around 4:00 in the afternoon begin hike out of the canyon arriving at the hardest part when the
sun is not beating down on us.
If we hike out in the evening then we would stay at Canyon Caverns again and then go to church
in Kingman Arizona about 2 hours away and then head home.
There is a mule that can take your things down for 93$ one way or 187$ round trip. You
can take four articles weighing up to 130 lbs. Good option for anyone wanting to hike
but not wanting to back pack all of those heavy things like tent, sleeping bags etc.
There is a lodge down in the village. The cost is 145$ for up to 4 people. Another good
idea if you don’t want to back pack all of your sleeping gear down. Some of us are doing
the lodge.
You can also fly into or out of the canyon in a helicopter. Many people do this. It is 85$
one way.
Thanks to Dave and Nat for setting the hike up and getting it on the calendar and thanks to Erin
Clegg for sending us detailed information about the hike. She and her family have done it
several times. This information is also from the internet and from people we spoke with on the
phone. We hiked it 25 years ago and it’s just too long ago to remember any of the details except
that the raccoons unzipped our backpacks and ate all of our food that we hadn’t put in our
tents. I also remember the Atkinsons and the Nygrens slept in their tents and left Kaye and Kimo
unsupervised to spend the night under the stars together-- even though they were only
engaged.
Dean and I drove to St. George yesterday and met up with Judi to make
the final plans. We had a great time and are very grateful to Judi for
her time and help. Here is what we have planned.
After the presentation we will split into three groups and tour the
Tabernacle, the Brigham Young home, and the Jacob Hamblin home under the
direction of a mission couple per group. We will also provide everyone
who is interested with maps showing where the James. G. Bleak, William
C. Moody, and Erastus Homes are or were. This will take us to 5:00.
Saturday we will meet in Pine Valley. We have three day sites (A, C, and
D) reserved in the new Thomas Forsyth picnic area which is three miles
east of Pine Valley in a beautiful wooded area. There are hiking trails,
a volleyball pit for the youth and horseshoes for the geezers. Starting
at 10:00 and going to 11:30 we have reserved tours of the Pine Valley
Chapel for all who are interested. This is the one designed by Ebenezer
Bryce to be an "upside down ship". Our great-great-great aunt Dorinda
Moody Slade was the relief society president there for 21 years and her
award winning quilt hangs on display.
Anyway this is the latest. I'll get more information out this coming
week including addresses and directions.
Don't forget, meet at the St. George Tabernacle at 12:45 on the dot
Friday June 25th! If you come early there is a nice park with a cool
fountain next to it to wander through.

PS. There is still plenty of room for anyone who needs a camping site
Friday night in Pine Valley. Just email me if you are interested.
