August 24th and so we are praying that Jason will be able to come home and be here for the

birth.  Shane has had to decide where to go to Graduate school.  He was accepted so far at
UNLV and at Cal State Northridge.  He is thinking it will be Cal State Northridge. He is in a
Masters of Social Work Program.  Everyone is doing good and enjoying summer.  I have been
able to stay with all of my children and their families and their families and I love it.  J Ward is
coming down to St George today to finalize plans for the Moody reunion here.  I have been trying
to help him find a park and a church for activities.  If any of you want to camp at Pine Valley,
contact J Ward at 801-372-5484 or 801-756-8248 or jmoody@byu.edu     He says he has a group
camp site reserved for Friday night.  people aer totally welcome to stay here at my house

Maddox is doing ok. He's been fighting ear infections almost continuously since March.
So he's scheduled for tubes and a couple of other procedures for June 23rd, as long as he's
not sick. If he's sick they won't put him under anesthesia, so please keep him in your
prayers. His heart is doing well though, so we are very grateful for that.

Sorensen news:
Because Kent and I just celebrated our 40th anniversary, Mary asked if I'd write a
few things about those years and maybe about our wedding day.

Recently I was on my service mission at temple square - stationed where the brides and
grooms come out of the temple to greet their waiting family and friends.  They are all so
beautifully dressed, so happy and full of hopes and dreams for a perfect life.. After one
couple walked out the door, the temple worker at the desk remarked, "If they only knew
what was ahead . . ."  We all laughed because we knew exactly what he meant.  As I look
back over 40 years of marriage - it is kind of funny to think back on how it all started and
what has taken place in our lives over those years. You really don't  know what lies ahead
- the ups and downs, happy times, challenging times -  how life will take so many twists
and turns.  When people ask for marriage and family advice, I feel reluctant to say
anything, because truly the older I get, the less I know.  Life has so many variables and
people and situations are all so different.  That's why "doing everything the Lord's way"
and "holding on to the iron rod" is really the only common factor that holds us all
together and moves us forward.  (Did that even make sense?)   Kent and I have had a
wonderful life together with our family being the greatest blessing of all.  Looking back
to our wedding day, we had a memorable event that maybe my sisters will  remember
(but Kimo was only 7),   We were going to the Lion House for the wedding luncheon
when  Pres. Joseph Fielding Smith came walking by (no body guards or fuss in those
days).  Since Grandma Moody knew him well - she called him over to introduce us and
explained that we had just been married in the SL Temple.  He took my hand, looked
Kent in the eye and said, "If he's not good to you . . . he'll answer to me!"  And Kent has
lived up to this charge - he's always been so good to me!

Elder Justin Sorensen:

We had a good but short talk with Justin on Mother's Day. (They were limited to 1/2
hour)  He's really loving his area and companions these days.  They are having a lot of
success and some

crazy experiences.  Justin continues to rip his pants on a regular basis and says they are
all now put together with duct tape.  When he went back to Georgia (first of Feb.) we got
him new pants - so they've only lasted 4 months.  What are we going to do with this
guy!   We are excited to see Elder Bytheway (Trish's son Aaron) in a couple of weeks.
He has worked a lot with Justin and will be returning home in 10 days.  Here's Justin's
latest email:

Hi everyone,

I’ll just bullet some things that happened this week:

 The Millers didn't end up being baptized. (The husband went crazy and he is now
running from the police -  he’s been trying to catch the family, for what purpose
who knows?  They have been kind of on the run just trying to avoid him - so we
are giving them some time for life to calm down a bit.
 We traveled officially about 2,900 miles this month!
 Had a pistol pulled on us.
 Met countless preachers, ministers and pastors this week.
 We were  threatened a few times by some angry baptists (haha)
 Met some wonderful families (Mcgees, Currys, and McFarlands)
 Found a massive spider I had in my helmet all day ( like quarter size body)
 Made wedding plans for Sis. Baily so she can be baptized this week
 And last of all - a million people talked  to us -I rode my unicycle all week out in
Sylvester and everyone was asking what we were doing.
 Had interviews with President Bowman
 Gave a talk in church Sunday

Hopefully that gives you a good idea of what is going on here.  I am looking forward to
having another good week!  I’ve been reading everyday a chapter from the Bible and
Book of Mormon - I just don't see how you can separate the two?  I need both to be able
to gain any kind of understanding of many of the doctrines.  So many people here say just

Memory Meadows Reunion Page 3 12/7/2021

what the Book of Mormon said they would say "A Bible! A Bible! We have got a Bible,
and there cannot be any more Bible"  It blows my mind to think people that so strongly
believes in God seems to limit him to the words of one book.  No one believes in
anything more than what the Bible says.  We asked a guy  " If  Jesus told you he had
more scripture would you listen?"  He answered "NO!  I would teach him from the
Bible".  I couldn't believe it!  Sometimes people just don’t care about finding the truth..
But those that do accept the Book of Mormon - grow so much because of their deeply
rooted faith in the gospel.  They just grow and flourish and it’s so great!  Well the time is
far spent I have to roll since I have a bunch of things to get done.   I hope all ya'll have a
great week and  know that I am thankful for all of you and love you all very much, God
speed.

Love, Elder Sorensen

Other family news:

- Jake has been in Italy for 2 weeks with friends and then went to visit Jodi, Christian and
their family in Germany for this week.  (Ahhh... the life of a bachelor)

- We're excited for Jessie/ Aaron and girls & Jared/Jamie and family to come for a visit
this summer.

- Our oldest grandson, Spence, just turned 12 and is receiving the Aaronic Priesthood this
Sunday.

-  Jenny and David blessed their beautiful baby "El Patrica" last week. (It was awesome!)
That's our #26.

-  Birthdays in May: Jill, Derek, Eden, Max, Jane, Heidi and Spence.  June birthdays are:
Hanna, Olivia and Aaron.

Last but not least - Josh's graduation!!!  We are excited for him to move on to the
next stage of life or maybe I should say we are excited to move on to the next stage of
life. (ha ha)  He's had a very good year: Sterling Scholar, Miner of the Month, "Pick"
award for service to the school, athletic service award, honor roll  (3.75 GPA) with a 4.0
this past quarter, Duty to God Award, Eagle Scout, Seminary (all A's for 4 years)  Most
important, he's a good kid who tries hard to do what's right.  We love you Josh.  He has
an academic tuition scholarship to UVU - but still hoping that the BYU football one will
come through.  For those who don't know, he has a scholarship to help with football
information, but his ACT was too low so we can't get him admitted.  The football director

Memory Meadows Reunion Page 4 12/7/2021

of operations is trying - but we're thinking he might have to go to UVU for a year and
then after his mission go to BYU because he'd have the required credit hours to elimate
the ACT.  He'll still work with the football prog

Sister Diana Nygren

I can't believe it is June! My favorite part of the day is in the
evening when it feels cool, the sunset glow is over the tall green
trees and the lightning bugs dance across the green grass. I love
being in Tennessee! We are teaching this awesome lady named Shannon.
Everything is pointing her to the church. She just moved here from
Wyoming but she has lived all over the world. She moved into this
house and happened to notice her neighbors going to church and asked
if she could come with them- yeah that is where we stepped in and said
let us come teach you! She had a Book of Mormon left in her house--
she is really searching. She's brilliant- has two masters- talk about
a little intimidating to teach but she is reading the Book of Mormon
and has that sincere desire so I know Moroni's promise will work with
her!
I have to share this funny experience. Sister Furniss and I were out
tracting and this lady drives by in her car and waves us over, really
excited-like. We thought it must be a member at first. We get there
and she is like, “Are you Jehovah Witness?” We were like-- no we are
with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Then she says oh
the Mormons- and goes off- well Jesus Christ is the creator of the
earth, He is our Savior... I can't remember everything but went off
for awhile and we were like yeah we believe that then oh man this was
so funny she spoke in some language that reminded me of Finding Nemo.
She was like woo to ma hunny hu ha ha- and translated saying something
like Jesus is Lord then went off preaching again and we said we
believe all of that. She said well what is the Mormon’s problem? We
said nothing--- ha she spoke in another language and then translated
again- ha ha then said I challenge you to read from that Bible of
yours. So I read 2 Nephi- We talk of Christ we preach of Christ and we
rejoice in Christ and we write according to our prophecies that our
children may know to what source they may look for a remission of
their sins.. She did not know what to say- shut her car door and then
drove away. We were like shaking after- and then laughed and laughed
and later that night telling our district leader that story we could
not stop laughing!!! ha ha yeah that is the South for you!
Excitement of religion here is sure crazy sometimes!

My highlight of this last week was Courtney's baptism. The family that
referred us to her planned all of it! It was so good! They had great

Memory Meadows Reunion Page 5 12/7/2021

musical selections. I spoke about the Holy Ghost and felt so happy to
be a missionary and so grateful to know Courtney- to see her so joyful
and excited to get baptized. After we went to the Hinckleys (
fellowship family) and ate dinner. They invited everyone- I loved
talking with everyone and just love all of these people here- those
are the sweet moments I absolutely love.

People in the South are super nice and I am trying to get a cute
southern accent but decided mine was sounding like a hillbilly so I
have given up the idea...

Yesterday for the closing hymn at church we sang Called to Serve. I

felt so grateful to be His missionary and so proud to be wearing the
black name tag!
Love, Sister Diana Nygren

White News:
Michael and Young graduated from Springville High School.  The both graduated
also from seminary Michael from the traditional 4 years and Young from 2 years.  Young
will head for home on the 16th of June and return for school at UVU in Aug.  Michael is
looking hard for a job and getting his duck in a row for his mission papers.  If he gets a
job he will go to BYUH for a semester and then go on his mission.  If it takes a while he
will just work and then go on his mission.  Ether way will be good.  We are excited for
the Esplin Reunion, but sorry we won't be able to go to the Moody reunion.

RACHEL IS GETTING MARRIED

Just wanted to let you know, if you hadn't heard yet, that Rachel is
engaged and is getting married on July 23rd. They are getting
married at noon on the 23rd in the Rexburg Temple with a luncheon
following the ceremony. We will be sending out invitations but just
wanted to let you all know in advance about her plans. If you can come
we would love to have you here. She is marrying a boy named John
Leonard from Sacramento, California. He is a wonderful young man
and we are very happy with her choice.
Here's something to think about while you are doing your summer
planning---
I was thinking that if anyone is able to come it would be fun for you
to stay and celebrate the 24th with us.There is a small parade in St.
Anthony and then we could rent rafts or tubes and go down Warm River--
or rent canoes and go down Big Springs (we've done this one before).
Afterwards we could have a bbq and celebrate together. Just an idea if
anyone is up to it. We can put up a couple of tents in the back yard
and sleep all over the floor and in the extra beds. Well think about
it.
Love you all.

Atkinsons:

Memory Meadows Reunion Page 6 12/7/2021

This year for the freedom festival they are honoring Scott’s dad, Chick Atkinson and
his four brother in laws for all being Veterans of World War II , serving at the same time.
Grandma Atkinson (Scott’s mom’s family…the HEndersons of Pocatello had five stars in
their window for each of the four sons and son in law who served during the war. They
will be honored at a dinner we will attend on July 2ed and at the Stadium of Fire and
parade. It will be very nice for our family to attend these events with the Atkinsons and
Henderson families. There is a write up in the Magazine that is sent out to Provo
Residents. It is very nice and a compliment to Scott and his family and all of us to be
connected with them.

Our children who are in school are doing great….Greg still will get a scholarship at
BYU this fall….Haylee had all A’s but one B…. And KC got three A’s and two
B’s….very great considering he had some very very hard classes…well all did!
Our family is running the Radnar race this next weekend. They begin in Logan Friday
morning at 5:30 am and end up in Park City on Sat. late afternoon. A total of about 200
miles along the most beautiful scenic route you can find anywhere. (Except maybe
Hawaii). All together (there are twelve runners with three legs each) We follow along
in the car even thru the night often. There are two vans which trade off …one is doing
the runs and the other is taking a break for 6 or more hours until they start again. They
run straight thru the night and it is a lot of fun. Erin and Mary will help drive the vans,
KC, Sadie, Scott, Spencer, Angie and Greg are running plus Jana Went is joining them
this year at the last minute….way to be in shape, Jana. Bryant and Haylee will be the
volunteers they have to provide to help with the race. So it is fun for all of us. Good luck
team.
Erin has found out that she is expecting a girl the end of September…we are excited
for their family! Angie, Ajay and Greg are vacationing with the Whittemore family in
Puerto Rico this week. They are having a fantastic time!! Sadie is officially thru with
her school and internship this next week. Congratulations, Sadie.

Esplins and Calls

We have not heard too much from either family, except Kimo and Kaye
are in Italy…what is that about? That sounds so great but we are worried
about your stream overflowing this week while you are gone. Call? We
need to know what you are doing to celebrate your anniversary. And
Nygrens: we need a bit more info about the Rachel’s fiancé!!

Our thought for June:

out His hands, those He touches are uplifted and become greater, stronger,

Havasupai Hike Itinerary

Wed. August 25th

From Provo to Canyon Caverns, Arizona it is about a 9-10 hour drive—according to map
quest. Erin thought it might be a little longer. We should leave Provo around 10:00 and
arrive in Canyon Caverns early enough to have dinner and get to bed early. They told me
on the phone that from Canyon Caverns to the start of the hike is about an hour and a half
drive. The hotel is 82$ (total with tax) for 2 double beds and a roll away. There are still
reservations available. Canyon Caverns is not a town but a stopping point on the way to
the start of the hike. It is about 12 miles from Peach Springs. The hotel in Peach Springs
is already full. I have the number if anyone wants it.

Those coming from California and Las Vegas could meet us at the hotel that night or just
meet us at the start of the hike in the morning.

There are other options available as well—let me know if you have other ideas.

Thursday Aug 26th

Wake up at 3 or 4 in the morning and drive to Hualapai Hilltop (1 ½ hour drive)

Have breakfast

Start the hike around 5 or earlier—before the sun starts hitting us and it gets boiling hot.

I’ve read where the hike takes from 4 to 6 hours.

Arrive at the lodge (town)—around noon or early afternoon—register and pay.

Memory Meadows Reunion Page 8 12/7/2021

For those who are staying at the lodge, check in.

Lunch

Hike 2 more miles to campsite and set up camp

Things to do:

Tonto Platform—overlooking the falls

New Navajo Falls—a new 35 foot falls formed in ’08 with the flood. Walk
behind the falls and jump out through a curtain of falling water into the pool.
The old Navajo Falls was destroyed in the flood of ’08 and I think there may
be two new smaller falls now.

Havasu Falls --100’ high—Enjoy the beautiful waterfalls and swimming

holes.

Dinner and talk story time

Friday Aug 27th

Wake up—Breakfast

Hike to Mooney Falls (½ mile from camp) and Beaver Falls (about 3-4 miles
from Mooney)

I know hiking down to the bottom of Mooney Falls is a little bit scary and
somewhat dangerous because you have to go along the cliff wall down to the
bottom with the help of chains and steps dug into the wall—so many may
not want to do it. We can just walk to Mooney Falls and take pictures, look
around then go back to Havasupai and swim. In order to get to Beaver Falls
you have to hike down Mooney Falls. I have heard it is really fun so we can
decide when we get there if we want to do it. When we hiked down there 25
years ago we didn’t even know about those last two falls. I know Atkinsons
have done it and so have some of my older kids when they were younger—
so we can decide when we get down there. You could also Google
Havasupai and read about it.

Memory Meadows Reunion Page 9 12/7/2021

Dinner and relax

Saturday Aug 28th

If we are ready to leave and don’t feel like we want another day in the canyon we would wake
up 3 or 4 and head back to the top to make sure we aren’t hiking in the heat of the day. Arrive
around 9 or 10 and then drive back to our homes.

or

Breakfast

Enjoy Havasu Falls and we could go into Carbonite Canyon and look for fossils

Around 4:00 in the afternoon begin hike out of the canyon arriving at the hardest part when the
sun is not beating down on us.

Dinner on the trail

Arrive at Hualapai Hilltop around 10 or 11 at night

Drive Canyon Caverns and stay in same hotel (1 ½ hour drive)

Sunday Aug 29th

If we hike out in the evening then we would stay at Canyon Caverns again and then go to church
in Kingman Arizona about 2 hours away and then head home.

Other ideas on getting into the canyon

 There is a mule that can take your things down for 93$ one way or 187$ round trip. You
can take four articles weighing up to 130 lbs. Good option for anyone wanting to hike
but not wanting to back pack all of those heavy things like tent, sleeping bags etc.
 There is a lodge down in the village. The cost is 145$ for up to 4 people. Another good
idea if you don’t want to back pack all of your sleeping gear down. Some of us are doing
the lodge.
 You can also fly into or out of the canyon in a helicopter. Many people do this. It is 85$
one way.

Other things people suggested bringing:

 Blow up floaters for the water

Memory Meadows Reunion Page 10 12/7/2021

 Calling card if you need to use the phone
 Collapsible water jug to fill up at the springs so you don’t have to keep going back and
forth
 Sunscreen
 Large hat to keep sun off
 Mole skin—blisters
 Enough water for the hike down—5-6 liters
 There are no fires allowed so bring food that doesn’t need to be cooked or a small store
with cooking fuel.
 Toilet paper
 Tent
 Sleeping bag or hammock-- I noticed that some people take hammocks down instead of
sleeping bags
 Mosquito spray?
 Swim wear and towel?
 Other ideas—let us know!

Thanks to Dave and Nat for setting the hike up and getting it on the calendar and thanks to Erin
Clegg for sending us detailed information about the hike. She and her family have done it
several times. This information is also from the internet and from people we spoke with on the
phone. We hiked it 25 years ago and it’s just too long ago to remember any of the details except
that the raccoons unzipped our backpacks and ate all of our food that we hadn’t put in our
tents. I also remember the Atkinsons and the Nygrens slept in their tents and left Kaye and Kimo
unsupervised to spend the night under the stars together-- even though they were only
engaged.

M. Ward Moody Family Reunion

Dear Moody Family,

Dean and I drove to St. George yesterday and met up with Judi to make
the final plans. We had a great time and are very grateful to Judi for
her time and help. Here is what we have planned.

Friday: Assemble at the St. George Tabernacle at 12:45 sharp! An actor

dressed up as Erastus Snow will meet us there and give us all a 20
minute presentation on this illustrious ancestor. It ought to be fun!

After the presentation we will split into three groups and tour the
Tabernacle, the Brigham Young home, and the Jacob Hamblin home under the
direction of a mission couple per group. We will also provide everyone
who is interested with maps showing where the James. G. Bleak, William
C. Moody, and Erastus Homes are or were. This will take us to 5:00.

After the touring is over we will assemble at Judi's stake center

(pending a final confirmation) We will have a dinner and will have some
pictuers and other displays that talk about our ancestry. If anyone has
any good pictures or writeups PLEASE bring them!!! The goal is to make

Memory Meadows Reunion Page 11 12/7/2021

sure we all gain or retain an appreciation of the marvelous heritage we
all have. We have a lot to be thankful for and proud of!! There will be
time to talk and bring everyone up to date on our families.

Saturday we will meet in Pine Valley. We have three day sites (A, C, and
D) reserved in the new Thomas Forsyth picnic area which is three miles
east of Pine Valley in a beautiful wooded area. There are hiking trails,
a volleyball pit for the youth and horseshoes for the geezers. Starting
at 10:00 and going to 11:30 we have reserved tours of the Pine Valley
Chapel for all who are interested. This is the one designed by Ebenezer
Bryce to be an "upside down ship". Our great-great-great aunt Dorinda
Moody Slade was the relief society president there for 21 years and her
award winning quilt hangs on display.

So we hope to have some education with plenty of time to talk. We will

have just the one meal together on Friday evening and trust people to
make their own eating arrangements on Saturday. There is no place to
eat in Pine Valley but there are plenty of places in St. George.

Anyway this is the latest. I'll get more information out this coming
week including addresses and directions.

Don't forget, meet at the St. George Tabernacle at 12:45 on the dot
Friday June 25th! If you come early there is a nice park with a cool
fountain next to it to wander through.

We look forward to seeing everyone!

J. Ward

PS. There is still plenty of room for anyone who needs a camping site
Friday night in Pine Valley. Just email me if you are interested.
