Honors English 10 Fall Reading and Assignments 2019
Welcome to Honors English 10. I look forward to meeting you and working with you
this year.
The following reading and assignments will be given at the beginning of the first
quarter; however, I wanted to give you the opportunity to begin working on the
reading and assignments during the summer as the assignments will need to be
completed by the specified dates.
A. Read the following chapters from How to Read Literature Like a Professor by
Thomas C. Foster (Revised Edition): 2, 5, 7, 9, 12, 14, 25, and 26 by Friday,
September 27th.
You may access the chapters online as a pdf.
You will need to take notes on the chapters. I recommend using one of the
following formats: Cornell Notes or Three Column Notes (see attached
templates).
B. Choose one book from the following list. The book must be read and notes must be
completed by Friday, October 11th. The notes must reflect the author’s purpose
and the strategies and explanations (diction, syntax, appeals, literary and
rhetorical strategies) employed by the author to convey his/her purpose. You are
expected to do your work on your own (no outside sources such as SparkNotes,
CliffsNotes, or Shmoop). You will use your notes to complete a formal essay that
will be assigned the week of October 12th. I recommend organizing your notes in
one of the following formats: Cornell Notes or Three Column Notes (see attached
templates).
