CASE STUDY NO. 13 : MERIDIAN IT

1. Explain the different reasons for the declining performance of Meridian IT.

The first is due to the increasing resistance by consumers to replace units that they deem to
still be good. This means that the consumers are optimizing and maximizing the life span of
their computers, so long as they are not broken, they will not replace them with new ones.

Second is the suprising growth of tablet computers and smartphones, both of which served
as viable substitute for casual computing needs. Nowadays, consumers are more interested
to use a more handy and more portable equipment that can be brought and carried in any
time or in case they would be needing them.

2. Do you believe that distributing additional brands beyond HP is in fact the solution that
can improve company performance? Explain.

Maybe that could be one of the solutions, to distribute additional brands of computers such
as Lenovo which is somehow managing to increase their sales and making it to the top after
the HP.

Since it is not only the Meridian IT that is struggling with its sales but also the HP itself,
maybe this could be an eye opener for the CEO of Meridian IT that they need to have a
backup plan. Meaning, they should not be dependent and focused on selling HP computers
only but must also give way to sell other brands that are making itself known to the market.

Meridian IT should also try to deal with those brands who are gradually being recognized in
today’s market and not those which are losing its way slowly, specially those brands that are
catering tablets, smartphones and other handy gadgets that can replace desktops because
they are the most demanded gadgets nowadays.

3. If you were to craft a strategic plan for Meridian IT, what would be your long-term vision
for the company. How do you propose to get there?

As I have mentioned earlier, Meridian IT should not only focus on selling HP desktops but
must also give itself a chance to get a deal with, promote and cater other brands such as
Lenovo as well as distribute other gadgets such as smartphones and tablet computers that
are needed and demanded by most of the customers nowadays.

It must go with the flow, cater those which are in trends in today’s generation. It should not
only concentrate on their products innovation, but must also manage its receivables very
effectively and efficiently. Collection must have a fixed net date allowing customers to pay on
time.

Beside this, they must give a good deal with regards to discounts on their customers to
encourage a good collection and high level of working capital that they could use to pay their
short term liabilities in return.
