Furniture that would once have been
regarded as suitable for the home or a leisure
environment is now appearing in the office,
as the human values of creativity and play are
emphasised in the search for new ideas. All
of this makes the subject of office furniture,
that was once the dull relation in the design
family, a whole lot more interesting.

The Vitra Design Museum in Germany,
is currently celebrating the centenary of
the ground-breaking American furniture
designer George Nelson. During his
career as a furniture designer, Nelson
developed and introduced the concept of
the work station and ‘L’ shaped work
desk to the world, furniture which has
radically revolutionised the office.
Nelson for many years collaborated
closely with furniture company
Herman Miller. At one point he even
brought in Italian designer Ettore
Sottsass to work at Nelson’s office
before the former returned to Italy and
started his collaboration with another
innovator of the office environment:
the Italian electronic company Olivetti.

It was in 1969 that Sottsass designed,
with British industrial designer Perry A.

not just getting money to survive, today
the job is a core of our life, to perform in
a team and to have fun to perform.’
As office space has become more
expensive, its use has to be maximised
and made flexible, as well as sculpted
to provide a comfortable environment.
For this reason, office design has also
become closely interconnected with the
science of ergonomics and the
development of new technological
materials, to create comfortable

furniture for the office. Although at
times this appears to engage more with
the rational and less with the
emotional.
However looking at recently
completed projects (in these and
following pages), it is clear that even
the corporations with the most rigid
corporate structures are aspiring to be
perceived as creative rather than just
efficient. They want to be seen as
transparent rather than enclosed.

Traditionally this type of message
would have been confined to the most
public areas of the office: the reception.
This is no longer the case. Now this
image of the corporation as creative place
is carried throughout the whole office
space. ‘The office is where corporate
culture crystallises. It is where a
company’s identity manifests itself and
where company values and brand mes-
sages are translated and experienced in a
spatial dimension,’ says Thomas Bene
executive director at Austrian office
furniture company Bene.

This is also evident in the new
offices for the flagship store of Italian
company Rimadesio in which efficiency
is expreessed by materials such as glass
and steel. In contrast the offices
designed for Swiss company Spectraseis,
applies the Net ’n’ Nest concept
designed for Vitra by the French duo
Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec. Their unique
use of colour and the creation of semi-
enclosed office spaces could be identified
as a new interpretation of George
Nelson’s legacy, blurring private and
public in the office space.

TriASS
Clear shapes, optimum functionality and the best

In the project featured here, for OKI Printing
Solutions’ new European Head Office, Clarke
Rendall were awarded the bespoke furniture
contract by Ascot based Interiors Specialists CBS
with whom, Clarke Rendall enjoy a long standing
and very successful business relationship.
By taking full advantage of Clarke Rendall’s design
development expertise and high quality 3d
presentation materials, both CBS and OKI

were afforded an invaluable insight into how the
final installation would shape up before the work
started in earnest.
As with any project of this scale, there were a host
of challenges to overcome, and CBS’s Matthew
Rickard was highly impressed by Clarke Rendall’s
commitment, flexibility and capacity to “think
way outside the box” in trying to resolve last
minute issues. “To them” he commented,
“nothing was a problem, I can’t praise them
enough in all aspects”.
