Instructions for Using The Occupations Finder ‘The 1,309 occupations in this classification include all of the most common occupations in the United States. arranged in a system that uses the code letters R, I, A, S, B, C. Realistic occupations (R) include skilled trades, technical occupations, and some service occupations. Investigative occupations (I) include scientific occupations and some technical occupations. Artistic occupations (A) include artistic, musical, and literary occupations. Social occupations (S) include educational and social service occupations Enterprising occupations (E) include managerial and sales occupations. Conventional occupations (C) include office and clerical occupations. Codes: The threedetter Summary Codes provide descriptions of occupations. For example, the code of ESC for Business Manager means that business managers resemble people in Enterprising occupations most of all, that they resemble people in Social occupations somewhat less, and that they resemble people in Conventional occupations still less. In this way, the codes provide a brief summary of what an occupation is like by showing its degrees of resemblance to three ‘occupational groups. ‘After exploring the occupations under your threedetter code, rearrange your code letters in all possible wayss and explore occupations under those threeletter codes. For example, if your code is IRE, explore occupations under IRE as well as occupations under IER, RIE, REI, EIR, and ERI. If this strategy isn’t helpful, see a career counselor for more information, DOT Numbers: The nine-digit number to the right of each occupational title is from the Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT), which can be found in most libraries, employment centers, and career centers. The DOT contains descriptions of occupations and estimates of interests and aptitudes associated with each occupation. Use the nine-igit code to locate the informa tion for an occupation in the DOT. Certain contemporary occupations within the rapidly developing field of informa- tion technology (marked with an asterisk in this booklet) cannot as yet be clearly defined in terms of characteristic ability requirements, desirable personality traits, typical interests, required training, or typical work settings. As these occupations evolve and precise DOT codes are assigned, their provisional Summary codes may be revised. Exploration of the material in the DOT will extend your understanding of any occupation. This process is an important part of the Self-Directed Search®. Unless you are well informed about the world of work, there will be many occupations in The Occupations Finder that you have never heard of, that sound humorous, or that you are sure you would never enjoy, although you know litte about what the occupation is really like. Don’t reject occupations until you know what they involve. Education Levels: ‘The singledigit number under “ED” indicates the level of education an occupation requires. These levels are only estimates and should not be regarded as precise requirements, The education levels are as follows 7 ED Level of Training Required 5-6 College training and possibly an advanced degree are neéessary 3-4 High school and some college, technical, or business training are necessary 2 Elementary school training or no special training is required Additional Sources: ‘The Alphabetized Occupations Finder contains an alphabetical listing of the 1,309 occupations listed in this classifica: tion. Longer lists of occupations for each threeletter code are contained in the 3rd edition of the Dictionary of Holland Occupational Codes (DHOC). The DHOC provides a listing of more than 12,860 occupations by threeetter code and an alphabetical listing of these occupations with their threeletter codes, See your career counselor for further information about The Alphabetized Occupations Finder and the DHOC. Additional information about occupations can be obtained from the Occupational Outlook Handbook, U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, which is published every 2 years.
