At the end of the world’s biggest elections in
the world’s biggest democracy, Indian voters
have delivered a result as clear as daylight
¡¡ DEV NADKARNI the seats in which the NDA was leading and

T
he Indian voter has endorsed the
leadership of Prime Minister Narendra
Modi most unambiguously and
emphatically, in a result as clear as daylight.
This is the first time in five decades that a party
has won an absolute majority twice.
His Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to
return with a majority all on its own, without
even having to rely on its allies with which it
forms the National Democratic Alliance (NDA)
to form the next government.
Just about an hour after counting began and
the trends started pouring in the final picture
began emerging rapidly – and from the get
go, the ruling NDA began extending its lead
over its main opposition, the Indian National
Congress-led UPA.
Within a matter of hours, the gap between
the others widened to a chasm, with any hope
of catching up slipping away as though facing
an avalanche. And it was not long after that the
celebrations in the leading alliance’s offices
began.
While the complete final result is as yet
unavailable at the time of going to press,
going by the leading trends there is no doubt
whatsoever that Narendra Modi and his BJP
have been swept back to power in a most
decisive manner by the inscrutable Indian voter.

NDA footprint grows but south
stymies clean sweep
T he NDA has undoubtedly improved on its
showing over 2014, making gains in states
where it faced headwinds the last time around.
This improvement was in part due to the deft
handling of alliance equations by the BJP’s
electoral negotiators, who have now developed
a reputation for forging winning alliances.
The most impressive gains for the NDA were
made in West Bengal (mostly the northern
constituencies) denting Mamata Banerjee’s
Trinamool Party’s pride severely. The North
Eastern states too have won handsome gains
for the NDA.
Uttar Pradesh did lose its lustre from the last
outing but it was hardly as bad as it was touted
to turn out by some pundits. The alliance with
the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra also paid rich
dividends. The BJP consolidated even further in
its pocket boroughs of Gujarat and Rajasthan,
despite the assembly election results showing a
markedly different result not so long ago.
However, the NDA was effectively stopped
from sweeping south of the Vindhyas, so to
speak, with Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil
Nadu, Odisha and even West Bengal in the
east showing a preference for regional parties
that were not aligned to either the ruling
dispensation or the opposition.
In Tamil Nadu, the Dravida Munnetra
Kazhagam (DMK) appears to be making a
clean sweep and so are Telangana’s Telangana
Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and in Andhra Pradesh,
the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party.
Big names wiped out
T he decimation of the big names from
the UPA abundantly shows that the old
equations of loyalty and the sense of entitlement
that pervaded some leaders who represented
constituencies and that were erstwhile royal
kingdoms and those that seemed permanently
attached to them politically are changing fast.

The Congress diviners had obviously read
the tealeaves well in advance and backed up
Rahul Gandhi with a safe seat in Wayanad in
Kerala, from where he expectedly won with a
major margin. But the world knows that was
a ‘backup’ victory and has no political heft
whatsoever.
The Congress failed to win a single seat in
several states, with Rahul Gandhi stating that
he took “100 per cent responsibility” for the
disastrous result. It is likely to only marginally
improve its showing from the 44 seats that it
won in the 2014 elections.
The result also put paid to any further
complaints and doubts raised by the opposition
of the electronic voting machines (EVM).
Result gives the lie to the media
narrative
O
ver the past couple of years, the
mainstream media has been scathingly
critical of the NDA’s policies. In the main,
its narrative projected widespread discontent
among large swathes of Indian voters mainly
because of the woes caused by demonetisation,
the introduction of the GST, high rates of
unemployment and unending problems caused
to millions of farmers, among a slew of others.
The Indian Weekender
That narrative has been given the lie with the
NDA making even greater inroads deep into
rural India, which was supposed to have borne
the brunt of all these policies. It is obvious that
the media narrative was wrong and based more
on ivory tower guesswork rather than reading
the pulse on the ground.
The negativity, peddled in large part by the
Congress-led opposition, spread internationally
with the American weekly magazine Time
running a cover featuring Modi describing
him as ‘Divider in Chief’ in an issue that hit
the stands in the middle of the election. The
result has emphatically rejected that label, with
the Indian people appearing to have actually
united behind him like no other leader in the
past several decades. Indeed, Modi has proved
a ‘uniter’ rather than a divider.
This has once again gone on to prove that
media stories can no longer sway the Indian
voter, who now has recourse to a plethora of
social media platforms to stay closer to ground
realities through their network of peers, without
urban interpreters trying to read the tea leaves
sitting in distant offices.
Indian voters’ maturity shows
T he way the Indian voters’ voting patterns
have gone in the past few elections shows
that that they are able to make a clear distinction
between local, regional and national issues.
The assembly elections in Gujarat, Rajasthan
and Madhya Pradesh in the last little while
during Modi’s first term might have had their
electoral strategists worried, with the BJP’s
reduced showing in those polls.
However, in yesterday’s results they came
out blazing in support of the BJP in a most
emphatic manner. What this demonstrates is a
maturity in the way Indian voters now think –
they make a clear distinction between local and
national politics, clearly demarcating issues
in their mind as being of local, regional and
national importance.
The result also shows that the Indian voters
have all but rejected the politics of divisiveness,
not heeding to certain parties’ and media
narrative of the ruling party’s agenda to divide
the country along religious lines, while making
a pretence of secularism and egalitarianism for
social justice but based solely on caste rather
than economic status.
Global leaders fete Modi
A
s the trends consolidated, congratulations
poured from all corners of the globe, with
Israel President Benjamin Netanyahu among
the first to send his felicitations. Russian
President Vladimir Putin, US President Donald
Trump, Chinese Premier Xi Jin Ping and dozens
of other leaders have sent in their messages.
For one, the scorching pace that the Modi
government set in developing relationships in
the international arena will continue and so
it appears will the pace of economic, social
and infrastructural development that the
government set domestically in the past five
years.

the Wellington chapter of the Guru
Nanak Free Kitchen on Saturday,
May 18 commemorating the 550th
birth anniversary of Sikh guru,
Guru Nanak Dev. The Guru Nanak
Free Kitchen in Auckland inspired the service
to be started in Wellington.
The service will provide pre-packed meals
to people in need every Saturday from 5:30
p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday in front of Reading
Cinema in Courtney Place the entertainment
hub of Central Wellington.
Ekta has roped in parties from other faiths to
be associated in this project as Guru Nanak is
highly regarded in all religions.
“It was a deliberate decision by Ekta as
Baba Nanak was regarded as Guru both by
Muslims and Hindus and in fact, his teachings
have made him a Guru for all humanity as they
have been incorporated in the United Nations
Faith for Rights Commitments,” coordinator
of the project Jasvinder Kaur told The Indian
Weekender.
Ekta is hoping to encourage others and
open the floor to collaborate with them in this
noble cause. The free kitchen will run for 30
weeks until the next birth anniversary of Guru
Nanak Dev.
“Collaboration allows groups which may
not be able to sustain this kind of activity for a
long time, to cooperate and take it over a longer
period, with each doing a few weeks,” Ms Kaur
added.

Wellington lauded the efforts of Ekat and said
launching this noble cause in the month of

Government declines plea to include café,
restaurant managers ‘Skills Shortage List’

he plea to include café and restaurant
managers in Immigration’s skill
shortage list has been rejected by
the Government stating those roles can be
filled locally if the pay rates are lifted for the
occupation.
The joint application by The Restaurant
Application and Hospitality New Zealand
was submitted along with evidence from the
hospitality industry that is facing a severe
shortage of café and restaurant managers.
The Ministry of Business, Innovation, and
Employment (MBIE) took the decision that
has now shut down hopes of hiring overseas
workers to fill the gap.
The Immediate Skills Shortage List is a
regional measure that identifies whether there
is a skill shortage within a certain region. If a
certain job is on the list, and an overseas worker
meets the requirements for that occupation,
they may be granted an Essential Skills Work
Visa.
The businesses in the hospitality industry,
cafes, hotels and restaurants, say the role for
the manager requires at least five years of
experience and there is a dire shortage of such
people locally and very difficult to recruit one
locally.
A Hospitality New Zealand member survey
found 92 per cent of its employers had difficulty
recruiting for this role.
Sky City was also cited in MBIE’s decision
letter. It said Auckland hospitality and tourism
employers were facing “unprecedented skill
shortages”, NZ Herald reported.

migrants,” Mr Lees-Galloway said.

Kerala, India.
The concept behind the charity organisation
is to help the people and become a helping hand
in their critical needs.
New Zealand is the eighth country in the
world to have started Lal Cares Charity in
the world. The organisation conducted two
fan shows in New Zealand- Odiyan and
Lucifer, which were received well by the
community here.
Malayali actor Mohanlal is one of the most
revered actors in South India and is regarded
as the Sachin Tendulkar of the Mollywood
film industry with works not just in films but
also philanthropic works and reaching out to
the poor and the needy and has also earned the
Mother Teresa award in 2014.
Lal Cares entered the Guinness Book of
World records in 2015 for making the world’s
largest charity box named wooden chest in

“The event was a great success – we had a
lot of people who benefitted from the charity
lunch, and we aim to continue the legacy of
Mohanlal’s philanthropic work in a however

his year’s annual concert in memory
of samvadini doyen, the late Pandit
Jayant Bhalodkar, featured Hindustani
classical vocalist Shweta Jhaveri from India.
Shweta is one of the most seasoned vocalists
on the Hindustani classical music firmament
today. She began learning singing at a young
age and then went on to be tutored by legendary
masters like Pandit Jasraj of the Mewati
gharana, whom she accompanied at concerts
later.
In her long musical career spanning several
decades, she has performed in solo recitals all
over the world and also collaborated with other
musicians on raga based world music initiatives
at both concerts and recordings. She divides her
time between the Western United States and
India.
At last weekend’s concert in Auckland,
though, Shweta sang a purely Hindustani
classical repertoire to a rapt audience of a
couple of hundred at the Mt Albert Community
Centre Hall.
She began with a bada khayal (full length
rendition) in raag Puriya Dhanashri, exploring
the evening melody with great finesse in slow,
medium and fast tempos. Her slow, languorous
development of the raag especially in the lower
octave over extended phases set her presentation
of the melody apart as her own style.

few years. She also punctuated her performance
of both Puriya Dhanashri and the post-interval
raag Jog with frequent meends (gliding from
one note to another) – again somewhat unusual.
Shweta’s presentation was equally cerebral and
entertaining.
For me, the standout piece was her faster-
paced Puriya Dhanashri number in the rather
rare but intriguing 10-beat Sultaal played with
great relish by Auckland’s ace table artiste
Manjit Singh.
With Manjit’s percussion support on tabla,
it was Samir Bhalodkar who accompanied
Shweta on samvadini – an innovation on the
traditional harmonium. The late Jayantji is
credited with some of the innovations, which
have taken it beyond being just an instrument
for accompaniment into one that can stand on
its own as a solo concert instrument.
Post-interval, the gifted artiste sang raags
Jog, Chandrakauns and her own innovation on
the final raag Bhairavi, which she calls Krishna
Bhairavi.
As in previous years, the concert was free
to attend and this was the eighth year that the
Bhalodkar family hosted the memorial concert.

As well as being based on a deeply flawed premise, the opposition campaign dripped
with personal invective, wild allegations whose facts and figures were a moving feast
and promises that were not only far from credible – like the UPA’s Nyay that promised
Rs 72,000 annually to millions of India’s poor – but also simply did not stack up.
The result has left the opposition completely directionless and without many of their
stalwarts because of their ignominious defeat. Which may be a good thing since that will
hopefully pave the way for newer blood that will be more attuned to news ways in which
the electorate thinks rather than the moribund style of old-world leadership.
While the result is great for the NDA, BJP and Modi’s supporters, it is not ideal purely
from a democratic perspective.
With no credible opposition to speak of, the winners will have a run of the government
and will need to be far more responsible and mindful of the weakened checks and
balances that an effete opposition will bring to the Lok Sabha.
Which brings great responsibility on the ruling NDA and its leaders, particularly Modi
and his top aides to exercise greater restraint, equanimity and fairness to all Indians
irrespective of their religious and political dispositions as the new government goes
about rolling out its agenda.
Modi has said his government will take everybody forward, leaving nobody including
his detractors and the opposition behind.
In doing that inclusively, he will have honoured the overwhelming mandate he has just
received from Indian voters, for the second time in a row.

he European Union (EU) will
give due consideration to
Fiji’s call for inclusion in the
list of countries with visa-free access
to the Schengen area.
This is expected to take place at
the next review of EU’s visa list.
This was highlighted after the
EU and Fiji held their fourth High
Level Political Dialogue under
article 8 of the Africa, Caribbean and
Pacific Group of States (ACP) – EU
Partnership (Cotonou) Agreement in
Brussels, Belgium, yesterday.
The meeting was co-chaired by
Fiji’s Foreign Minister Inia Seruiratu
and EEAS Managing Director
for Asia and the Pacific, Gunnar
Wiegand.
The EU and Fiji noted that since
1 May Fiji citizens intending to
travel to Germany can submit their
applications for Schengen visas in
Suva.
Fiji reported on progress made
in its discussions with other EU
member states on a similar scheme
that would allow for the processing
of applications for Schengen visas in
Suva, providing for visits to these EU
member states.
The EU and Fiji also reviewed
bilateral relations, including
development cooperation, the
EU-Pacific Economic Partnership
Agreement (EPA), bilateral
cooperation on tax good governance,
visa issues, fight against climate
change, as well as developments in
the Pacific region.
Developments in Fiji, including
efforts underway to consolidate
democracy and human rights, as well
as in the EU, including Brexit, were
also discussed.
In a joint press statement, Fiji
outlined a number of tax reforms
and initiatives for mobilisation of
domestic resources for development
that it viewed as essential for the
country’s consistent economic
performance.
Both parties took good note of the
inclusion of Fiji in the list of non-
cooperative jurisdictions, released by
the EU on 12 March 2019.
The EU and Fiji agreed to discuss
this matter further so as to facilitate
Fiji’s efforts to reach compliance
with the requirements, as this will
make it possible for the country to be
removed from this list.
Discussions also focused on
the potential that the Economic
Partnership Agreement provides for
the strengthening of EU-Fiji trade
relations.
The EU encouraged Fiji to take

The BJP described the meeting as an
occasion to thank ministers for “their service to
the nation” ahead of the counting of votes for
the Lok Sabha election on May 23, following
which a new government will assume charge.
Later in a tweet, Shah said, “I congratulate

remarkable achievements in the last 5 years. Let
us keep this momentum going for a New India

I ndia’ ambitious moon mission Chandrayaan 2 will be launched after July
9, Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman Dr. K Sivan said of the
mission that missed an earlier launch window in January.
“Chandrayaan 2 is going to be a landmark mission for India which will
be launched between July 9 and 16. Chandrayan 2 is the most challenging
mission undertaken by ISRO. It will land at a place where nobody else has
landed before,” Sivan said, according to news agency ANI.
The Chandrayaan-2, which is set to cost about Rs 800 crore, will involve
unloading of a rover to study the Moon. Speaking about the moon mission in
January Sivan had said that ISRO was looking at having a woman astronaut
in the mission, although he did not specify how many people would be a
part of it.
“We want women astronauts also to be a part of the mission. In my
opinion, we have to train both men and women,” Sivan had said in response
to a question.

compounds like detergent and urea were being freely mixed with milk and

On Tuesday, a huge dairy plant was raided in Varanasi by the state's

detergent was seized. The plant was run by Pure Dairy Solutions which also

he Rajasthan High Court on Monday served fresh
notices to Bollywood stars Tabu, Saif Ali Khan,
Sonali Bendre, Neelam Kothari and Dushyant
Kumar, a local resident, in the 1998 blackbuck poaching
case following the state government’s appeal against their
acquittal. On the state government’s plea, the High Court
earlier issued notices to the five respondents on March 11.
On Monday, Justice Manoj Garg issued them fresh
notices after prosecution counsel Mahipal Singh told
the court that none, except Neelam Kothari, received its
earlier notices. 
The court asked all the five respondents to reply to the
notices within eight weeks.
In its plea filed on April 5 last year, the Rajasthan
government questioned the acquittal of the five persons
for lack of evidence, when actor Salman Khan, who was
accompanying them, was proven guilty.
Khan was awarded a five-year imprisonment, along
with a penalty of Rs 10,000, after being held guilty under
Section 51 of the Wildlife Protection Act for killing two
blackbucks in 1998 during the shooting of Hum Saath
Saath Hai. His appeal is pending in the High Court.

t's been over seven years since
the audience saw actress Karisma
Kapoor lighting up the screens
with her high on energy and impactful
performances. She says she chose not
to do full-fledged roles in films for
a while as she wanted to be at home
with her young children. But now the

saddle in a different avatar and on a
new platform.
The mother of two has been doing
ads, fashion events and making special
appearances in movies including last year's
Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Zero.
But did she get nervous working for long
hours and acting in front of the camera after
a gap?
Comparing acting to cycling and
swimming, Karisma said in a telephonic
interview: "It (acting) is ingrained in
you. It is something that never
goes away. I was waiting

t's preferable to not recreate a
classic as iconic as Aladdin,
but after walking out of Guy
Ritchie's movie as the end credits
began rolling, I was proven wrong.
Instead of messing with the old, Guy
took the best elements of the Disney
fairytale and just added a pinch of
modern flavours to give us the 2019
version.
Whoever thought of casting Will
Smith as Genie, I tip my hat to you.
Will breathed life into the beloved
character by doing exactly what
Robbie Williams had done, going all
out and over the top.
Taking his Fresh Prince persona
quite literally, this martini-drinking,
body-building Genie to Will is what
Ruffalo is to The Hulk in Avengers:
Endgame. It's just seeing Will on-
screen as an Avatar character. Just
like Williams, Will makes Genie the
heart of this Aladdin tale.
Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott
are the perfect fits to complete the
puzzle as Aladdin and Princess
Jasmine. The quirkiness of Mena
and the feistiness of Naomi are the
perfect combination to take us to a
whole new world. Their chemistry
was set in motion the minute the two
rode the magic carpet. Speaking of
the magic carpet, we are immediately
transported back to our childhood as
we see beloved characters like Abu
and Iago. Marwan Kenzari makes the
most of playing a Disney villain and
owns Jafar. What's a hero without a
villain to defeat?
We can't talk about Aladdin
without the music and A Whole New
World deserves a special mention.
Naomi's vocal range is unbelievable
and classic broadway while Mena
and Will add a modern twist to the
classics.
At times the musical breaks
deviated from the storyline but the
choreography in many had this
Bollywood fans heart melting. Incase
you cringed when you saw Will in
Student of the Year 2, Aladdin more
than makes up for it.
The storyline is crisp and tactfully
mixed with some brilliants lines
mostly said by Genie or Jafar. The
VFX, especially with Will's Genie is
top-notch. A special mention to the
elaborate detailing to the costumes,
especially Jasmine's.
In the end, I was left satisfied
and a little giddy. You enter the
theatre knowing what is going to
happen, which is the happily ever
after. However, it's the journey that
makes fairytales wonderful and Guy
Ritchie's Aladdin is worth it. Whether
it be Aladdin escaping the cave of
wonders or Aladdin finally setting
Genie free, relive your childhood
one more time, through the eyes of a
whole new world.

indu scholar and author Nithin Sridhar says menstruation
should not be considered shameful but should be
celebrated as a basic requirement of womanhood, as an
integral dimension of feminineness.
Talking to the media, Sridhar, author of Menstruation Across
Cultures-A Historical Perspective, said thousands of years of
foreign dominance had distorted our thinking on this issue of
vital importance. Most Hindu communities celebrate menarche
as the beginning of womanhood and not an event filled with
shame.
Sridhar was in the Taj city to interact with women's groups and
offer his perspective on this crucial subject.
Sridhar offered an interesting journey across civilizations and
religions delving into a difficult topic.
"My book has come at a correct time too when the Sabarimala
issue is dominating our news with misinformed and confused
debates all around."
"This is especially true in Indic traditions and pre-Christian
polytheistic traditions like Greco-Roman, Mesopotamian and
