Service brake, system description

Service brake, overview

1 Compressed air connection

2 Return spring
3 Push rod
4 Diaphragm
The function of the service brake is similar to the front section (service brake section) of the spring brake
cylinder. When the foot brake pedal is depressed, air is fed into the cylinder through the compressed air
connection (1) and presses the diaphragm (4) against the push rod (3) which in turn applies the wheel
brake. When the driver releases the foot brake pedal, air is exhausted from the cylinder and the return
spring (2) pushes the diaphragm (4) and the push rod (3) back to their original positions.
Service brake, applied

1 Connection
2 Diaphragm
3 Push rod
When the compressed air from the foot brake valve enters through the connection (1), the push rod (3)is
pushed to the applied position by the compressed air acting on the diaphragm (2). The wheel brake is
applied with a force equivalent to the compressed air pressure.
