FURNITURE Design..

In addition to architecture, Gehry has made

a line of furniture,
jewelry for Tiffany & Co.,
various household items,
sculptures, and
even a glass bottle for Wyborowa Vodka.

His first line of furniture, produced from 1969 to 1973, was called
"Easy Edges", constructed out of cardboard.

Another line of furniture released in the spring of 1992 is

"Bentwood Furniture".
FURNITURE Design..

He became famous in the 1970s for creating his style of furniture.

Frank O Gehry is one of the most sought after international furniture

designers.

He uses everyday materials such as corrugated board, plaster and

wickerwork to produce his furniture designs.

CARDBOARD FURNITURE…..

Frank O. Gehry discovered a process that ensured cardboard

furniture--making a new burst of popularity.

“One day I saw a pile of corrugated cardboard outside of my office –

the material which I prefer for building architecture models – and I
began to play with it, to glue it together and to cut it into shapes
with a hand saw and a pocket knife.”

It was thus possible to transform massive blocks of cardboard

into cardboard sculptures.
Corrugated fiberboard is a material consisting of
a fluted corrugated sheet and one or two flat
linerboards.

The corrugated medium and linerboard both are

made of containerboard, a paperboard material
usually over 0.01 inches (0.25 mm) thick.

Corrugated fiberboard is also called cardboard,

although cardboard might be any heavy paper-pulp
based board.

With addition of mechanical strength and impact

resistance.
EASY EDGE BOARD….

Gehry named this material Edge Board because of its smooth and
attractive curves.

• it consisted of glued layers of corrugated cardboard running in

alternating directions, and

• in 1972 he introduced a series of cardboard furniture under the name

“Easy Edges.”

•The “Easy Edges” were extraordinarily sturdy, and due to their

surface quality, had a noise-reducing effect in a room.
WIGGLE SIDE CHAIR

Wiggle Chair by Vitra, the most beautiful modern chair

ever made.

Chair was designed in the period between 1968 to 1972.

This sculptural Wiggle Chair is an icon of modern

furniture design and is a real museum piece.

In the 1960s a trend for cost-efficient and lightweight

materials led to experiments with using cardboard in furniture design.

Gehry developed a cardboard material called 'edge board' that used

multiple layers of corrugated cardboard glued together to make it strong
enough to be practical.

CROSS CHECK CHAIR (1990)

Inspired by the surprising strength of

the apple crates he played on as a child,

Frank Gehry created his original

collection of BENTWOOD FURNITURE.

The ribbon-like designs transcend the

conventions of style by exploring forms.

EASY EDGES…..

The “Easy Edges” were a great success and brought Gehry a fame as a
furniture designer.

 as sales prices were no longer consistent with Gehry’s basic idea of

offering furniture to suit anyone’s pocketbook.

“ I started to feel threatened. I closed myself off for weeks at a

time in a room to rethink my life. I decided that I was an architect,
not a furniture designer … and I simply stopped doing it.”
