LSAD DANISH DESIGN……Introduction
Danish Design is a style of functionalistic design and architecture that was developed in
mid-20th century.
Influenced by the German Bauhaus school, many Danish designers used the new
industrial technologies, combined with ideas of simplicity and functionalism to design
buildings, furniture and household objects.
Prominent examples are the Egg chair, the lamps and the Sydney Opera
House (Australia)

LSAD Family of Danish Design……
Jacobsen was admitted to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1924 from
where he graduated in 1927.
In everything from the elegant curtain-wall structure, the furniture, the
lighting, the textiles, the door handles and down to the cutlery, Jacobsen’s
creative talent was evident.
The full bodied sculptural shapes of The Egg and The Swan chairs that are
now considered modern furniture icons, constituted an interesting contrast to the
angular, stringent style.
Another well-known Jacobsen creation is The Ant chair designed in 1951 and
introduced in 1952.
LSAD EGG Chair and SWAN Chair….
LSAD The Ant chair is a classic of modern chair design
It was designed in 1951 by Arne Jacobsen for use in the canteen of the Danish
pharmaceutical firm Novo Nordisk.
The Ant was named for its approximate similarity to the outline of an ant with its head raised.
The chair was designed to be light, stable, easy to stack up, and to minimise tangling the
user's feet.
Three plastic legs and a seat made from -moulded laminated veneer.
The narrow ‘waist’, which gave the chair its name, was necessary because
of Jacobsen’s wish to keep the bent plywood seat and back in one piece.

Designing furniture was not enough, many of the great Danish designers of the
1950s were also great architects.

LSAD DANISH ARCHITECTURE….
Functionalism
When it comes to Danish architecture, the 1930s introduced rational architecture of
concrete, glass and iron, designed to meet the social needs of the time.
It later evolved and blended with characteristics from modernism such as using
irregular ground plans, open plan interiors, flat roofs and glass facades
