Lesson Plan
Course: Reading 2

Topic: Predicting, Previewing, and Scanning in Descriptive text

Time: 40 minutes

Teachers: Vita Loka Medi and Nanda Ayu Marsela Dewi

Group: 10

A. Course Description
In this course we will learn:
1. Predicting
Predicting is not really a technique but a skill which is a basic to all the reading
technique practiced in this part and to the process of reading generally. It is the
faculty of predicting or guessing what is to come next, making use of grammatical,
logical and cultural clues. This skill is at the core of techniques such as
“anticipation” and will therefore be practiced in those sections, but it may be
worthwhile to devote some time to more systematic.

How to predict
1. Look at the tittle
2. Look at the picture
3. Think about what you know already (making connections to prior knowledge)
4. Make our prediction

2. Previewing

Previewing is a very specific reading technique which involves using the

table of contents, the appendix, the preface, the chapter and paragraph headings in
order to find out where the required information is likely to be.

 Strategy
Previewing in Reading

Before you read something, look it over quicly. Look at the pictures and read the
titles and the heading (the titles for each paragraph or section.) This will give
you ideas about the reading . Whit ideas in mind, you will understand more.

(Interaction ACCESS Reading by Pamela Hartmann & James Mentel)

 When To Use It
Previewing is a strategy readers use before and during reading.
 How To Use It
When readers preview a text before they read, they first ask themselves
whether the text is fiction or nonfiction.
 If the text is fiction or biography, readers look at the title, chapter
headings, introductory notes, and illustrations for a better
understanding of the content and possible settings or events.
 If the text is nonfiction, readers look at text features and illustrations (and
their captions) to determine subject matter and to recall prior knowledge,
to decide what they know about the subject. Previewing also helps readers
figure out what they don’t know and what they want to find out.

3. Scanning
When scanning, we only try to locate specific information and often we do not
even follow the linearity of the passage to do so. We simply let our eyes wander
over the text until we find what we are looking for, whether it be name, a date, or
a less specific piece of information.

 Strategy
Scanning
Tou can scan a reading to find information quikly. Follow these steps
to scan :
 Know the information that you want to find.
 Look for that information.
 Move your eyes quicly across the words. Don’t read every word.
You will practice scanning throughout the book when you look for
specific informatin and details
(Interaction ACCESS Reading by Pamela Hartmann & James Mentel)

1. How to scan a text

When you scan, you know what to look out for and you don’t really
read everything but your eyes search for the keyword or keywords and
looking for a specific word, numbers, names etc.

(EPB Pan Pasific,2006))

4. Descriptive
A. The definition of descriptive text
Descriptive Text is a text which says what a person or a thing is like. Its
purpose is to describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing.

B. Generic Structure of Descriptive Text

There are some generic structures of descriptive text. There are
identification and description.
 Identification: (contains about the introduction of a person, place, animal or
object will be described.)
 Description: contains a description of something such as animal, things,
place or person by describing its features, forms, colors, or anything related
to what the writer describe.
C. Purpose of Descriptive text

– To describe person, thing or place in specific

– To describe a particular person, thing or place.

D. Language Feature of Descriptive Text

– Specific participant: has a certain object, is not common and unique (only
one). for example: Bandengan beach, my house, Borobudur temple, uncle
Jim

– The use of the adjective (an adjective) to clarify the noun. for example: a
beautiful beach, a handsome man, the famous place in jepara, etc.

– The use of simple present tense: The sentence pattern used is simple
present because it tells the fact of the object described.
– Action verb: verbs that show an activity (for example, run, sleep, walk, cut
etc.)

I like his tail although my mom say that it is like a rat’s tail. I love his usual color
