Basic Theory

Since the wave length 980nm of diode laser is absorbed by water and haemoglobin, it allows
controlled soft tissue ablation and provides bloodless field for most surgical procedures. It is the optical
option for vaporization and coagulation of soft tissue.

PLDD: Percutaneous Laser Disc Decompression

PLDD is the abbreviation of percutaneous laser disc decompression surgery. It is one of the widely
used clinical method of minimally invasive spine surgery. PLDD refers guided C-arm X-ray or CT,
with the 16G or 18G puncture needle pierced the lesion cervical/lumbar disc, imports 200-800μm
fiber through the needle, and then starts emitting laser treatment system. Part of the disc nucleus is
vaporized, thereby reduces pressure inside the disc to achieve a minimally invasive surgical for
treating disc herniation.

By reducing the pressure in the intervertebral disc and the inflammation of surrounding tissues, it
removes oppression or stimulation from the vertebral artery or sympathetic nerve. At the same time
the stimulus threshold to the nerve increases, so that the blood supply to artery of the vertebral
radical gets improved, and thus achieves the goal of treating vertebral disease.

The whole process of PLDD operation only talk 15 minutes, and is visible under C arm X-ray or CT.
