American National Standard
A n American National Standard implies a consensus of those sub
stantially concerned with its scope and provisions. A n American National
Standard is intended as a guide to aid the manufacturer, the consumer,
and the general public. T h e existence of an American National Standard
does not in any respect preclude anyone, whether he has approved the
standard or not, from manufacturing, marketing, purchasing, or using
products, processes, or procedures not conforming to the standard.
American National Standards are subject to periodic review and users
are cautioned to obtain the latest editions.

C A U T I O N N O T I C E : This American National Standard may be

revised or withdrawn at any time. T h e procedures of the American
National Standards Institute require that action be taken to reaffirm,
revise, or withdraw this standard no later than five years from the
date of publication. Purchasers of American National Standards may

d o o r A p p a r a t u s Bushings ( A N S I C 7 6 . 2 - 1 9 7 7 ) . ]

This publication is based on the standard practices in the United States for outdoor apparatus
bushings. It is the result of joint efforts of professional engineers, manufacturers, and users working
together in American National Standards Committee C 7 6 under the auspices of the American
National Standards Institute ( A N S I ) . The work was initially carried out under the auspices of the
American Institute of Electrical Engineers ( A I E E ) [now the Institute of Electrical and Electronics
Engineers ( I E E E ) ] and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association ( N E M A ) . The original
standard, approved in 1 9 4 2 as A I E E Std 2 1 (which became A S A C 7 6 . 1 - 1 9 4 3 , American Standard
for Apparatus Bushings) was prepared by the Joint Committee on Bushing Standardization of the
Electric Machinery, Power Transmission and Distribution, and Protection Devices Committees of
the A I E E .
A supplement and partial revision, A N S I C 7 6 . 1 - 1 9 5 8 , American National Standard Electrical and
Dimensional Characteristics of Outdoor Apparatus Bushings (used with Power Circuit Breakers and
Outdoor Transformers), was prepared by the N E M A Joint Sections Committee on Outdoor Appara
tus Bushings (composed of representatives of the High Voltage Insulator Section, Power Circuit
Breakers Group, Switchgear Section, and the Transformer Section). It resulted from work by the
regional associations of electrical utilities and filled the user's needs for dimensional interchange-
ability.
A t the time of this supplement, A S A Sectional Committee C 7 6 foresaw the need for a general
revision and updating of the standard and asked A I E E and N E M A to submit recommendations. In
N E M A , implementation of this request was undertaken by a Subcommittee of the Joint Sections
Committee on Outdoor Apparatus Bushings and resulted in a proposal which was approved Febru
ary 1 9 6 0 by the Codes and Standards Committee for submission to C 7 6 as the N E M A recommenda
tion. In the A I E E a Joint Working Group consisting of members of the Transformer and Dielectric
Test Committee of the Transformer Committee and of the Power Circuit Breaker Committee was
established and developed a recommendation which was submitted to C 7 6 in July 1 9 6 0 . The AIEE
proposal was subsequently reviewed by the West Coast Subcommittee of the A I E E Transformers
Committee which developed additional recommendations and submitted them to A S A Committee
C 7 6 in November 1 9 6 0 . Committee C 7 6 appointed a special Working Group for Revision of C 7 6 . 1
to consolidate the several proposals and recommendations. This became IEEE Std 2 1 - 1 9 6 4 and was
approved June 9 , 1 9 6 4 , as A N S I C 7 6 . 1 - 1 9 6 4 , American National Standard Requirements and Test
Code for O u t d o o r Apparatus Bushings, A S A C 7 6 . 1 - 1 9 6 4 ; it was reaffirmed in 1 9 7 0 .
Work on a revision was initiated in Committee C 7 6 in August 1 9 6 8 . A decision was made to sep
arate the standard into three parts; the first ( C 7 6 . 1 - 1 9 7 6 ) to cover the general requirements and test
procedures, the second ( C 7 6 . 2 - 1 9 7 6 ) to cover explicit ratings and dimensions, and the third to be
an application guide. The latter is still under consideration. Other changes in this revision included:
( 1 ) test procedure updating, ( 2 ) adding 3 6 2 through 8 0 0 k V maximum system voltage bushing elec
trical ratings with wet switching impulse test values and coordination with switching surge spark-
over values of arresters, and ( 3 ) establishing dual current ratings for 1 1 5 through 1 9 6 kV insulation
class bushings, since circuit breakers have a lower temperature rise, permitting a larger current rat
ing for a given maximum ambient temperature compared with transformers.
