Tips
• Work through the problems after you have completed the readings. If you get stuck, look back through
the the readings and your lecture notes. Quite often, the readings contain examples that guide you
through the steps you need to follow to do the exercises. If you still cannot solve the problem, ask for
a hint during office hours or tutorials.
• Your tutorials will be based around these problems. Make sure you have completed the readings
and made a first attempt at the homework problems before your tutorial. Come to the
tutorial with your questions about the readings and/or problems. You will find the tutorials most
effective this way.
• Get in the habit of writing complete solutions and presenting your work clearly. As a guideline, you
should write your solutions in a way that another student could understand them without undue effort.
After the corresponding quiz, compare your solutions with the posted solutions, making corrections
where needed, and come to office hours for help if you are still unsure whether or not you solved the
problems correctly. Keep a record of your work to use as a study aid throughout the semester.
• For plotting direction fields you can use software such as Maple or GeoGebra (command SlopeField)
at http://www.geogebra.org/classic. These tools will not be available on quizzes/exams, but if
you are provided with a slope field for a differential equation be prepared to analyze the behaviour
of the solutions. You should also be able to match differential equations with their corresponding
slopefields from a list of options.
