History:

“There was no way to call Lew Fielding with the news because the phones were all dead along
South Beach. So the four of them, cups of green tea in hand, spoke quietly about the trial of
Kabuo Miyamoto, which was for them the only subject possible, as it had been for many days”

This quotation represents quite clearly the style of the characters’ life when the story took place.

The phones were all down means that there are only wired phones back then, there were neither
cell phones nor social media or even internet connection. Therefore when there is news or an
event, it becomes the center of the talks for couple of days.

When the normal method of communication is off, then there is no easy or handy way to be in
contact with individuals who are not physically present.

News used to spread orally between individuals and making real physical communication or by
newspapers which is not preferable to everyone.
