> FOREWORD
Pavement maintenance is an essential activity for the long-term
life of pavement structures. Properly timed and constructed
pavement maintenance procedures can be used to extend the
service life of all pavements.
This manual has been prepared for those directly concerned
with pavement maintenance. It provides useful and practical
information about methods, equipment and terminology that
applies to the use of asphalt in the maintenance of all types of
pavement structures, including highways and shoulders; streets
and parkways; airfield runways, taxiways, and aprons; parking
lots and access roads; and driveways and alleys.
‘The maintenance of drainage facilities is discussed only for
issues related to the drainage of the pavement structure itself.
Not covered in this manual are pavement striping or painting;
curbs and gutters; maintenance of bridges; slope paving and
erosion control; snow removal or snow fences; guide rails;
traffic signs; sweeping of debris; care of wees and other
vegetation.
