BONDERITE M-MN 117
known as BONDERITE MN 117 MU
MANGANESE PHOSPHATE CONVERSION COATING, NICKEL FREE
March 2013

Properties
and Application Fields: BONDERITE® M-MN 117 (KNOWN AS:BONDERITE MN 117 MU) is
formulated to produce a non-metallic, corrosion resistant
coating on iron and steel surfaces. BONDERITE® M-MN 117
(KNOWN AS:BONDERITE MN 117 MU) produces an oil-absorptive
coating, which permits rapid break-in of moving parts
without scuffing by preventing metal-to-metal contact
between the bearing surfaces. It increases lubrication of
treated surfaces due to the oil-absorptive coating on
articles such as pistons, rings, liners, camshafts, tappets,
motor blocks and similar bearing surfaces.

Process Components: BONDERITE® M-MN 117 (KNOWN AS:BONDERITE MN 117 MU)

Processing steps: In carrying out the treatment, suitable cleaning and

processing equipment should be provided. Articles of
established manufacturing limits and tolerances should be
first processed on an experimental basis and submitted for
approval before they are processed on a production basis.
The same cleaning and processing procedures should be
followed on articles treated on production that were
employed on the experimental trial. In view of the wide
variety of articles and many types of steel and iron treated
with the process, no general instructions can be given which
will apply in every case. However, the instructions given
herein have been derived from commercial experience and if
carefully followed, should produce satisfactory results.

The complete process for the treatment normally consists of

the following steps:

1: Cleaning
2: Water rinsing
3: Surface conditioning
4: Phosphating with BONDERITE® M-MN 117 (KNOWN AS:BONDERITE
MN 117 MU)
5: Water rinsing
6: Drying (not required if a soluble oil is to be applied)
7: Oil finishin(optional)

Equipment: Process tanks and housings may be fabricated from 300 series
alloy stainless steel, such as 304L or 316L. The 316L being
preferred for maximum tank life. Process pumps should be
constructed of 316 or 304 stainless steel alloys. In all
case approved welding techniques must be used.

All process circulating pumps seals, valve seats, etc.,

which come into contact with the process solutiona and
occasional acid equipment cleaners, should be EPDM, Viton or
Teflon.

Chemical feed pump parts and other elastomers which may come
into contact with the concentrated BONDERITE® M-MN 117
(KNOWN AS:BONDERITE MN 117 MU) solution should be EPDM,
Hypalon, Viton or Teflon.

Surface preparation: Cleaning:

All metal must be clean and free from rust, oil, grease,
buffing, polishing and drawing compounds, smut, and dirt
before the treatment. The use of strong alkaline cleaning
(Ridoline range) is recommended for maximum performance.

Rinsing:
The rinsing bath must be continuosly fed with fresh water at
a rate which will keep it clean and free from scum and
contamination.

Surface conditioning:
To obtain a homogenous and fine grained manganese phosphate
coating, the use of a conditioning agent is required
(Fixodine range).

Phosphating with BONDERITE® M-MN 117 (KNOWN AS:BONDERITE MN

117 MU):
Please observe the specified technical data. It is important
not to fall below the specified bath temperature. Too low
temperatures will cause non-compact (permeable) coatings. In

the other hand, avoid heating the BONDERITE® M-MN 117

(KNOWN AS:BONDERITE MN 117 MU) processing solution above the
recommended range or for extended periods of time when idle
since these conditions result in raising the Free Acid. Free
Acid values above the desired range can etch steel surfaces
and could fail to produce complete coatings within the
normal processing time. The anticorrosive effect of the
manganese iron phosphate layers is distincly decreased if
the iron content in the phosphating bath exceeds 2 g/l.
Optimum results results are achieved with an iron
concentration under 1 g/l.
The coating weight obtained with this treatment depends on
the method of cleaning, the type of metal and the hardness
and surface finish.
Rinsing:
The rinsing bath must be continuosly fed with fresh water at
a rate which will keep it clean and free from scum and
contamination.
Drying:
The treated material should be dried as quickly as possible
or oiled in an anticorrosive emulsion.

Bath control: The BONDERITE® M-MN 117 (KNOWN AS:BONDERITE MN 117 MU)
system can be controlled by determination of the “Total
Acid” points, the ”Free Acid” points, the Acid Ratio as well
as the iron(II) content.
1. Determination of the”Total Acid” points:
- Pipet a 2 ml sample of the cooled bath solution into a 150
ml beaker.
- Dilute with approx. 50 ml of distilled water.
- Titrate with a 0.1 N NaOH solution till pH 8.5.
- The consumed ml of the 0.1 N NaOH sol., multiplied by a
factor of 5 correspond to the “Total Acid” points.

Specified range: 50 - 65 points

Bath replenishment:
For 1.000 l of phosphating solution the following amount is
added for each missing “Total Acid” point:

BONDERITE® M-MN 117 (KNOWN AS:BONDERITE MN 117 MU)

3.2 l (4.6 kg)

Normally the Total Acid is maintained at 50 - 65 points.

Frequent small additions of BONDERITE® M-MN 117 (KNOWN
AS:BONDERITE MN 117 MU) chemical give morenuniform results
than occasional additions of large amounts, and it is
desirable to control the solution within ± 2.0 points of the
value found to give best results.

2: Determination of the”Free Acid” points:

- Pipet a 10 ml sample of the cooled bath solution into a
150 ml beaker.
- Dilute with approx. 50 ml of distilled water.
- Titrate with a 0,1 N NaOH solution till pH 4,3.
- The consumed ml of the 0,1 N NaOH sol. correspond to the
“Free Acid” points.
Specified range: 3.0 - 7.0 points
Bath replenishment:
For 1.000 l of phosphating solution the following amount is
added to decrease “Free Acid” value 0,1 points during
operation:

BONDERITE® M-AD MN-2 (KNOWN AS: ADDITIVE Mn-2) 67 g

3: Calculation of the Acid Ratio:

The Acid Ratio is calculated using the following equation:

(Total Acid” points)

Acid Ratio = ---------------------------
(“Free Acid” points)

If the Acid Ratio is too low in the BONDERITE® M-MN 117

(KNOWN AS:BONDERITE MN 117 MU) bath, Compensateur 12 must be
added to reduce the “Free Acid”.

4: Determination of the iron(II) content:

- Pipet a 10 ml sample of the cooled bath solution into a
150 ml beaker.
- Add 10 ml of H2SO4 solution (25 % v/v).
- Immediately afterwards titrate with a 0,1 N KMnO4 solution
till a persistent (10 seconds) faint pink end point.
- The consumed ml of the 0.1 N KMnO4, multiplied by a factor
of 0.56 correspond to the iron(II) content of the bath in
g/l.

Specified range: max. 2.0 g/l

The iron(II) content should be maintained under 2 g/l;

however, satisfactory coatings may be obtained outside this
range depending on the particular type of steel or alloy
being processed.

Reduction of the iron(ii) content:

- The simplest method of maintaining iron(II) levels is by
aerating the bath by using gas diffusers. Air should be
introduced into the bath from columns of fine bubbles from a
gas diffuser(s). Several may be necessary. Place diffusers
above the sludge level to prevent stirring sludge from

bottom of the tank. Aeration may be continuous or

intermittent as needed.
- Partial dumping of operating bath.
5: Sludge removal:
The sludge produced while operating the phosphating bath
must be removed in regular intervals (e.g. at the weeken) in
order to avoid deposits on the phosphated material.
Desludging is indispensable at the latest when the treated
material dips into the sludtge deposits at the bottom of the
tank. For sludge removal the bath solution is first allowed
to settle, then the clear solution is pumped into a separate
tank or into an adjacent empty rinsing bath. After removal
of the remaining sludge the tank must be cleaned thoroughly.
