INTRODUCTION TO BOLD:

BARCODE OF LIFE DATASYSTEMS

COURSE DETAILS

DATE: 30 & 31 July 2019

COURSE Sujeevan Ratnasingham (UoG) & Michelle van der Bank (UJ)
ORGANIZERS:
COURSE Sujeevan Ratnasingham (UoG), Megan Milton (UoG), Adriana Radulovici
PRESENTERS: (UoG), Ronny Kabongo (UJ) & Michelle van der Bank (UJ)
The Workshop is funded by a grant awarded through the Foundational
Biodiversity Information Programme (FBIP), a joint initiative of the
COURSE SPONSORS: Department of Science of Technology (DST), the National Research
Foundation (NRF) and the South African National Biodiversity Institute
(SANBI)

Maximum participants: 30
This hands-on workshop will familiarise participants with the Barcode of Life Data System (BOLD), the
only informatics platform dedicated to DNA barcoding. BOLD plays a crucial role in assimilating and
organising data gathered by the international barcode research community. As a result, it provides
specialised services to researchers, helping them to assemble records that meet the standards for
BARCODE designation in global sequence databases. BOLD is hosted at the University of Guelph
where it is developed and maintained by an interdisciplinary team of biologists, bioinformaticians, and
programmers. Members of this team together with the African Centre for DNA Barcoding will offer this
workshop. Participants will be able to learn about barcode data generation, analysis, management and
publication through manipulating own data or provided test data.

Registration for the workshop is free. Local flight and accommodation costs will be covered for 30
participants. However due to space limitations, prospective participants are kindly asked to send a
PDF document of one page maximum including any information indicating their current use of DNA
barcoding and possibly BOLD. This document will assist the organisers to select the 30 participants.
