Liaison Manager

The Biomedical Research Centre and the National Centre for Text Mining seek to appoint a liaison
manager to support their research and commercialisation activities; to establish, maintain and develop
strategic links with industry and tool/resource suppliers; and to contribute substantially to ensuring the
sustainability of both centres. The post is available with immediate effect for 2 years in the first
instance.
The National Centre for Text Mining (www.nactem.ac.uk) forms part of the School of Computer
Science at the University of Manchester. Its role is to provide text mining services to the academic
community. The successful candidate will provide industrial and research management for a strong
and dynamic team in text mining, liaising with the Medical School and the Biomedical Research
Centre activities.

Job Title: Liaison Manager

Overall purpose of the job:
The Biomedical Research Centre and the National Centre for Text Mining seek to appoint a
liaison manager to support their research and commercialisation activities; to establish,
maintain and develop strategic links with industry and tool/resource suppliers; and to
contribute substantially to ensuring the sustainability of both centres. The post is available
with immediate effect. Appointment is initially for 2 years with possibilities of extension.
The successful candidate will provide industrial and research management for a strong and
dynamic team in text mining, liaising with the Medical School and the Biomedical Research
Centre activities.
The National Centre for Text Mining (www.nactem.ac.uk) forms part of the School of
Computer Science at the University of Manchester. Its role is to provide text mining services
to the academic community.
Duties and Responsibilities of the Post:
The responsibilities are to include, but not be limited to:
· Working proactively to bridge research activities and sustainability aspects of BRC
and NaCTeM.
· Managing all daytoday commercial and business development activities in BRC and
NaCTeM to meet defined targets set by the Business /Management Boards and the
Directors.
· Working closely with BRC and NaCTeM’s boards in the formulation, revision and
extension of the Centres business plans.
· Developing and maintaining an extensive network of commercial relationships
through formal and informal business development activities, ensuring appropriate
contact management.
· Organising conferences, seminars, workshops, short training courses and newsletters
for academic and especially industrial text mining users, ensuring financial targets
covering the cost of such events are met.
· Seeking new sources of funding for research and service initiatives, and helping to
prepare proposals for funding.
· Preparing and presenting talks providing information about text mining with a
commercial focus, including market and technology trends, particularly to promote
NaCTeM services to industry, but also to inform NaCTeM staff.
· Establishing and cultivating strategic relationships with commercial equipment, tool
and resource suppliers of relevance to NaCTeM activities.
· Organising and developing a subscriptionbased Industrial Club for both vendors and
commercial users of text mining tools and services.
· Taking a leading role in marketing and publicising BRC and NaCTeM activities to
companies.
· Being the primary commercial representative of NaCTeM to companies.
· Proactively identifying opportunities for the creation and support of spinoff
companies for commercial exploitation of NaCTeM tools and resources with particular
emphasis to biomedicine.
· Maintaining close communication with BRC and NaCTeM bodies and the related
Project Managers.
· Identifying and protecting Intellectual Property associated with NaCTeM tools and
resources.
· Leading contract negotiation with industrial partners.
· Working with BRC investigators to identify opportunities for collaborative research.
· Actively promote the vision of BRC and NaCTeM within the University through
involvement in related wider issue committees
· Liaise with UMIP and Development Managers providing accurate information when
requested
Person specification:
Essential knowledge, skills and experience:
Essential
· A 2:1 first degree in science or engineering, or qualification in income generation or
marketing or related area, or equivalent relevant experience
· Work in relation to commercial bioscience or health sectors
· Business development, business management or industryacademia collaboration.
· Commercial contract negotiation and dealmaking
· Track record in fund raising and income generation
· Successful proposal development and writing
· Organisation of events
· Management of relationships with industry
· Composing and delivering reports and presentations
· Identification and protection of IPR
· Technology and market analysis
· Capacity for initiative and experience of managing own activities
· Commercial and business acumen
· Strong communication and influencing skills, with ability to promote innovative
services
· Effective negotiation and conflict resolution skills
· Excellent presentation skills with evidence of presentation at meetings and
conferences

· Higher degree in science, engineering or management
