Likewise, the number of hate-related incidents accounted for less than 0.1% of the total number of incidents reported to MP over the period reviewed. 2. Examination of Military Police reported incidents occurring bet ing between January 2013 and November 2018 saw a total of $3 CAF (noted in Figure | & 2 below) were identified | as being part of a hate group or and/or made statements which could be | viewed as discriminatory/racist. Of those 53 persons, 30 are currently serving members of the 3. METHODOLOGY 5. Information contained in this report was obtained from a variety of open and closed sources including an extensive review of the Security and Military Police Information System (SAMPIS), information from the Canadian Forces National Counter Intelligence Unit (CFNCIU), and civilian police agencies. 6. The validity of information collected within SAMPIS and other sources is dependent on the accuracy and completeness of information entered by the originators. In 2016, 48% of all police-reported hate crimes were motivated by hatred of a race or ‘ethnicity while hate crimes targeting religious groups accounted for one-third of all hate crimes in Canada (see Table in Annex B). The birth of the internet increased right-wing extremists’ visibility. Online communities provide a venue to share and expand their ideologies and allow connections with a potential for recruitment, as well as “lone actor” activity.
