LESSON PLAN IN GRADE 7 JOURNALISM


(with Explicit Teaching Strategy)

I. OBJECTIVES

 identify the contents of a lead


 summarize popular fairy tales in one sentence
 write a one-sentence summary lead for a hard news story

II. SUBJECT MATTER:


Topic: Writing summary lead for hard news stories

Materials: Powerpoint presentation, manila paper

A. INTRODUCTION/PREPARATION

B. Motivation
a. Learners will have a #throwback on the lessons discussed last time. The
learners will focus on the definition, elements, the three basic parts and
the two types of news story specifically on the first of the two major
classifications.

C. Teaching/ Modeling
a. The lesson will now be introduced
b. The teacher will now teach and model how to write a lead by using
fairy tales and analyze.
c. Steps in writing the lead will also be discussed:
 Use a single sentence of no more than 35 words
 Follow the S-V-O order
 Write the most important information first (Big Six/ 5W&H)
 Don’t use unfamiliar names in the lead
d. More examples will be given for the students to analyze

Example Lead for the story Goldilocks:


 A young Forest Homes girl escaped unharmed today when she
was chased through the woods by three angry bears.

e. After analyzing examples, the teacher will then present a short


animation clip of the story Hansel and Gretel. A one-sentence lead will
be constructed using the pattern.

 A young brother and his sister burned a witch to death in her own
oven last night, after being held captive for days in a cabin in
the woods.
 Twelve-year-old twins Hansel and Gretel Woodcutter narrowly
escaped being eaten in the Netherland Woods Saturday night.

D. GUIDED PRACTICE
a. FAIRY TALE NEWS NETWORK part 1
 Students will watch the story Three Little Pigs and will write a lead out
of the story. The teacher will guide them in formulating the lead.
Different answers are to be expected.

Example Lead for the story Hansel and Gretel


 Two little pigs were hurt after being attacked in their own
homes yesterday by the Big Bad Wolf.

b. FILL ME UP
 Students will complete the one-sentence leads with different angles
provided by the teacher
Yesterday while everyone was sound asleep…
The Big Bad Wolf strikes again, this time, attacking….
With his vicious fangs and claws, the Big Bad Wolf…
A trio of pig brothers…

E. INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
a. FAIRY TALE NEWS NETWORK part 2
 The class will be grouped into 5 and will be given a fairy tale
 They will four possible one-sentence leads with different angles
 Each group will write their answers on a manila paper
 It will be presented afterwards

F. EVALUATION
 It is a crafted system of delivering information.
 What are the two types of news story?
 True or false: News writing is opinionated
 Give three important steps/tips in writing the lead

IV. ASSIGNMENT
Notebook:
If today was a story/event, list down the Big Six and write a one-sentence lead
out of it.
