Lab analysis

In this lab, we test the best condition for an enzyme to catalyze the reaction in the
different temperature and pH. The enzyme is Catalase which is in the pork liver and the
substrate is hydrogen peroxide. We get H2O, oxygen which can be seen as bubbles and
energy in the form of heat as the products, This can be implied that it is catabolic. For the
temperature, including 3 conditions which are normal liver, heated liver, and cold liver in the
room temperature hydrogen peroxide. The best condition is normal liver. Normal liver in
hydrogen peroxide produces a lot of bubbles which means the reaction happens a lot. For
the cold liver, there are some bubbles but less than normal liver. The last one is heated liver
has the least chemical reaction occur in the least duration. According to the experiment, the
normal liver in hydrogen peroxide has the highest rate of chemical reaction and has the
longest duration. The worst condition is heated liver because it has the lowest rate of
chemical reaction and the least duration as we can see from the number of bubbles in the
tube. Also, the enzyme catalase is denatured when it exposed to the overheat temperature,
so the enzyme isn't able to function. For the pH, including acidified and basified liver in the
room temperature hydrogen peroxide. pH is one of the factors of enzyme denaturation which
depends on the type of enzyme. From the experiment, it can imply that enzyme catalase can
work in the basified condition because we can see a little the chemical reaction or the
bubbles in the tube, but the acidified condition has no chemical reaction occur at all, that
means catalase can not work in this condition because acid makes the enzyme denatured.
However, there are some errors while doing the experiment. The size of pork livers
that are cut unevenly cause the difference of the time record and the number of bubbles in
each condition. There’s the error in the time record when we start and stop the timer. Also
the result for the heated liver should be no reaction because enzymes are denatured by the
heat, but the error is that there are some small pieces of normal liver in the tube, so they will
react to the substrate and when there’s the reaction happen pork liver get to the higher level
in the tube and we push it back into the substrate so the reaction continue also the time
record. For the cold liver, the result should be no reaction because the enzyme will work in
the best condition of normal temperature, if it’s too cold the enzyme will be inactive, but we
put pork liver is in the fridge for short time, so it’s not cold enough to do the experiment. To
improve the next lab we should cut pork liver evenly and we should do the experiment at
least 3 times so that we can calculate the average of the time that reaction occurs more
reliable and accurate.

Conclusion
In conclusion, the catalase enzyme catalyze effectively when it is in the normal
temperature and basified condition. Heat and acidified condition cause enzyme denaturation,
so there isn’t any reaction occur.
