Before Catalogue for the purchase of yearling during the busy sales season:

Q: Are you someone who studies the sales catalogues

before they make their trip to sales house?
A: I do not study sales catalogues as I physically inspect every
horse. Hence I do not have an opinion on the comparative
strength of catalogue nor do I have specific lots to suggest
keeping an eye on or an opinion on the first season sires.

Q: Are there sires, you always keep a look out for as a

good return for your yearling investment?
A: I have no particular favourite sires because I treat each
yearling as an individual.

Q: Has technology affected and influenced your

business?
A: Technology affects everyone's business because it allows
easier & usually instant access to information.

Q: What is the best piece of advice you have been

given?
A: The best piece of advice I've had is that every stallion has
its champion and that its usually a freak. That's why I don't
dismiss horses by their sire.

Q: When you're not working how do you like to spend

your time?
A: I'm always working. This industry is 24-7 and global.

Q: Which particular yearling in recent years gave you

the most pleasant surprise with the sale price?
A: This year's Victoria Derby third placed Chapada was a
very good buy. I immediately recognised him as an ideal
Derby prospect so his purchase price of only A$32,500 at
the 2017 Inglis Classic was a nice surprise. We have since

A: I believe that this year's catalogue is the most select

Q: How often do you attend the Easter Yearling Sales?

A: I attend W. Inglis Easter Yearling sale every year. It is

Everything has been planned and designed to give ample

Q: Have you had a chance to take a peek at the Easter

Yearling Sale Catalogue? If yes, what do you think of

Peter Gelagotis Racing this year's offering as compared to last year?

A: Yes, I have had a good look at the catalogue this year and it
might lack in numbers being a smaller select book but the
quality is endless – its going to be a very strong market selling
over 2 days only.

Q: Are there any specific sires, whose progeny get first

A: The good sires really excel in this sale like Snitzel, I Am
Invincible & Redoutes Choice and everyone wants them. In
this Sale it is difficult to separate the ones that can slip
through because the best buyers all over the world attend and
all the best judges so it comes down to type, pedigree and
confirmation and unfortunately you will have to pay the

Q: Are there any sires you currently see as underrated?

A: Dundeel appears to be going very well and Pierro is one of
my favourites being the sire of my great 3yo Levendi who
was the dominant horse of his age last year winning at Group

The Triple Crown Affair his brother Chris, Michael continues to take Triple Crown
Bloodstock to new heights.

He sat down for a little chat with Ten Furlongs. Here's what
we discovered.

Q: What do you think of the drafts in this year's Easter

Sale? As is always the case with the Inglis
A: Easter Yearling Sale, it is a very strong catalogue with some
very well related yearlings on offer and it will be as
competitive as ever.

Q: Which yearling in recent years gave you the most

pleasant sur prise with the sale price ver sus
performance?
A: We've had several Inglis graduates who have done
exceptionally well for us in recent years. In particular, Moss
Trip who was purchased for AUS$32,000 and is now a Group
3 winner and Peggy Jean who won the Group 1 Sires' Produce
in 2014 for the Triple Crown team after her purchase for
AUS$46,000. Both are horses of a lifetime!

Q: How often do you attend the Easter Yearling Sales?

A: We have a presence at the Easter sale each and every year as
we look for our next Redzel or Hot Snitzel!

Q: How important is black type and race record in your

evaluation of a yearling prospect?
A: We look at a variety of factors. Of course the quality of the
family in its ability to produce elite racehorses is important,
but in equal measure we place an importance on type and
essentially we're looking for athletes with the genetic make-up
to race at the top level.

Q: What stallions do you like as broodmare sires?

A: We've had success with a variety of broodmare sires and
those with proven records like Encosta De Lago and Canny
Lad we always take note of. But then we've had success with
less notable sires including Falbrav, a son of Fairy King like
Encosta De Lago is. He is the damsire of Charlie Boy and also
an exceptional yearling we picked up from the Inglis Premier
Sale in March.

the brilliance that Lloyd Kenewell is.

Q: How do you approach an upcoming sale? What are

the processes you follow and what do you do differently
to find those “hidden gems”?
A: We look at every horse in the catalogue and then identify
the ones we like to “short list”. Once the shortlist is made, we
try to trim the numbers down to the ones we “love”. You
usually know when you see the one you want!

Q: Have you had a situation where you have bought a

horse for a client or for pin-hooking, sold the horse
onwards and then questioned whether you should have
kept the colt yourself ?
A: Not really, you need to be comfortable on the decision
making and trust your judgement. An old saying “if you keep
looking back you get a sore neck”.

Q: Have you had a look at the Easter Yearling Sales

catalogue? What are your aspirations for this year's
Easter yearling sale market?
A: It is one of the best sales in the world and it brings the
biggest buyers from around the world. Some of the best
equine athletes you will see, will be at this sale in 2019.

Q: Which of the first-crop sires are you high on this

season?
A: I am firmer on buying from the proven stallions that I have
had success with. But in saying that I am liking the look of the
