INTRODUCTION: Self-driving vehicles are cars or trucks in which

human drivers are never required to take control to safely operate the
vehicle. Also known as autonomous or “driverless” cars, they combine
sensors and software to control, navigate, and drive the vehicle.

PROS: Environmental impacts are a serious concern, and a major

uncertainty. Accessible, affordable, and convenient self-driving cars
could increase the total number of miles driven each year. And if they
are powered by electricity it will result in a much cleaner and safer
impact on the environment. At the same time with the power to help
mobilize those who are unable to drive themselves such as the elderly
and disabled.
For safety purposes and consistently safe operations on the road
autonomous cars are equipped with numerous cameras and other
types of sensors to carefully monitor the external environment the
vehicle is operating in. As the infrastructure grows and becomes more
developed, more sensor input will lead to safer operations.
In the meantime auto manufacturers Former Ford CEO Mark Fields
has stated that by the year 2021 Ford plans to have a level 4 vehicle
with “no gas paddle, no steering wheel, and the passenger will never
need to take control of the vehicle in a predefined area. At the same time
Volvo is planning to roll out a fully autonomous car in the same year.
CONS: While the previous statements are true, it does not change the
fact that the self-driving car has a very big concern, and is that it can
be hacked. It doesn’t matter if it’s extremely hard to hack or it has a
very low chance to be. Most people are scared because of this fact and
will have a hard time trusting their lives to this kind of vehicle. If after
the autonomous car becomes available to the public, and a hacking
case will happen most people will be to scared to even get in a self-
driving car.
The development of self-driving cars will be noticed within the job
market. A lot of people will lose their job, such as taxi driver, truck
driver, at the same time it is said that other types of jobs will be made
available such as computer scientists at the automotive industry and at
mobility service providers. But we need to keep in mind that those
people who will lose their job are not specialized in that kind of work.
They will need to start over, maybe learn from scratch for a different
work domain, and many of them will not be able to do just that.

IN CONCLUSION: This step forward, to an autonomous future will

happen and we need to be prepared. Maybe we don’t like it but we
need to accept it.
