LESSON PLAN

Unit: Softball Date: 5/6 & 5/8 Standard: SHAPE America S1.H1., S2.H2., S4.H2., S4.H5.
Lesson Focus: Fielding Grade: Freshman Girls PE Facility/Equipment:

Sequence: Day 2 Gloves Bat
Softballs

Lesson Intro (What will you say to get the students’ attention, communicate the lesson objectives, and motivate students to achieve them?):
We are continuing our softball unit today. Before we practice our fielding skills, we are going to do a warm up with the exercise dice and then review
throwing and catching.

1. Students should be able to recite and perform the throwing and catching 1. informal observation & check for understanding

5 min in squads attendance & explain layout of day Gather in the middle. I am going
to have one student roll the dice
each time to see how many of
each exercise we will do for our

10 min around gym warm up (see attached) get a quick drink of water and
or on turf -exercise dice then meet me back in the gym.
-roll 1 dice for running (however many laps) When you get back, get a
-roll 2 dice for strength/agility (how ever many repetitions) partner. Each of you should get a
glove and have one ball for the
both of you

5 min with partner review throwing and catching (see attached) Gather around me. We are going
to start working on our fielding
skills. We will start with infield.

10 min with partner infield fielding (see attached) Gather around me. We are going
to continue with our fielding
skills. This time we are working
on out fielding where you will be
catching pop flies

10 min with partner outfield fielding (see attached) Gather around me again. We are
now going to play a game where
we will use our out field fielding
skills. I need 5 people to help me
demonstrate

5 min in groups “500” out-fielding game (see attached) we are now going to play a
game. 1’s are batting, 2’s are in
the field

20 min in teams play a whiffle ball game

Who can recite the cues we have learned so far, in both throwing/catching and fielding? Great job today! Next class we are going to be working on hitting.

Description of Activities

warm up
• 1 dice will be rolled to see how many laps the students will run
• 2 dice will determine how many repetitions will be done of the following activities
• push-ups
• sit ups
• squats
• 1 dice will be used to determine repetitions for running exercises

• have pairs see how many consecutive throws & catches they can get
• repeat a few times to see if they can beat their score

infield fielding
• students have a partner and they are across from one another
• on knees
• partners are rolling the ball back and forth to one another
• rolling the ball straight to their partner
• partner will use the cues “out” “grab” “in” to remember how to properly field a rolling ball
• forehand (ball is rolled to the forehand side)
• partner the same cues “out” “grab” “in” to remember how to properly field a rolling ball
• backhand (ball is rolled to the backhand side)
• partner the same cues “out” “grab” “in” to remember how to properly field a rolling ball
• in proper stance
• in a squatting position
• toes pointed forward
• rolling the ball straight to their partner
• partner will use the cues “out” “grab” “in” to remember how to properly field a rolling ball
• forehand (ball is rolled to the forehand side)
• partner the same cues “out” “grab” “in” to remember how to properly field a rolling ball
• backhand (ball is rolled to the backhand side)
• partner the same cues “out” “grab” “in” to remember how to properly field a rolling ball
• students are in 4 single file lines
• there is one tosser facing the line but 5 steps back
• tosser will roll either a forehand, backhand, or down the middle
• when the receiver gets the ball, she will throw it back to the tosser
• switch tosser after 2-3 minutes

outfield fielding
• class is split in half and are in 2 single file lines
• there is a tosser for each line
• on “GO” the tosser will throw a pop fly to either the glove side or the hand side
• the receiver will use the cues “drop” “target” “in” to remember how to field a pop fly
• after receiving the ball, the student will throw it back to the tosser
• switch tosser after 2-3 minutes

• 6 per group
• 1 person tossing/hitting it into the air to make a pop fly
• the rest (5) are trying to catch/field the ball and get the points
• the first to get to or get closest to 500 points wins
• tosser calls out how ever many points the catch will be worth
