QUALITY CONTROL – DIMENSIONAL CONTROL

A. PURPOSE
The purpose of this document is to ensure that dimensional control is maintained, verified and
performed throughout fabrication process as per project drawing and specification.

B. SCOPE
This procedure is applicable to PT Asianfast Marine Industries and its subcontractors for the
construction of the marine construction or parts.

C. RESPONSIBILITY
a. Supervisor in charge is responsible for:
 Monitoring and ensuring the compliance with defined tolerances through all phases of
fabrication (material cutting, fit-up, post welding etc.) and erection activities on the
materials, sub-assembled items, assembled items, final structure etc.
 Defining and implementing the remedial actions in case of out of tolerance results
found after dimensional control inspection.
 Identifying and requesting additional dimensional inspection (if necessary) during all
phases of fabrication activities.

b. Quality Controller is responsible for:

 Conducting dimensional inspection as detailed in this procedure.
 Preparing and issuing the dimensional inspection report.
 Ensuring the calibration validity of dimensional control equipment.
 Participating in the definition of remedial actions in case of out of tolerance results
found after dimensional inspection.
 Providing additional dimensional inspection that may be required during various
phases of fabrication activities.

D. DIMENSIONAL INSPECTION PROCEDURE

Dimensional inspection shall be conducted by Quality Controller using calibrated equipment as
required. Dimensional inspection shall be conducted at various stages of fabrication & installation.

1. EQUIPMENT
All measuring equipment shall be controlled and calibrated. Typical equipment used is as
follows:
 METER TAPE to measure the length of tubular and others such as squareness, height,
ovality etc.;
 THEODOLITE to determine the angle, measure the straightness and verticality. It may
also measure the length of beam, pipe, tubular and etc.;
 WELDING GAUGE to check and measure the weld size, high-low of tubular, pipe and
all others such as under-cut, material thickness etc.;
 TRI-SQUARE to use for marking and measure the squareness;
 WATER LEVEL to measure and check the levelness and verticality;

 STRAIGHT EDGE to mark the straight line of center point.

 STRING to measure the straightness and deflection.

2. MEASUREMENT
All dimensions shall be measured and reported in metric, and all angles shall be reported
in degrees.

3. DIMENSIONAL CHECK ON PRE-FABRICATION

a. Mark checking.
All marking check shall be carried out prior to cutting any shape, bracket, profile bar,
etc. prior to fitting to ensure the specification/engineering drawing is being followed.
b. Dimensional checks in pre-fabrication are based on measurement of lofting/cutting
plan/shape cutting/bending/ etc.

4. DIMENSIONAL CHECK ON ASSEMBLY

a. Mark checking.
Mark checking shall be carried out prior to welding any part of structure to ensure the
specification/engineering drawing is being followed.
b. Straightness.
Straightness in assembly of nozzles, brackets, angles shall be taken from measurement
tape, triangle rule, water level, and string according to engineering drawing.

5. GENERAL DIMENSIONAL INSPECTION

Quality Controller carries out the following activities as dimensional control survey, in
relation to fabricated items:
a. Check the set up position of the tank for level, alignment, and other supporting for
settlement.
b. Perform dimensional control survey on individual plate member and sub-assemblies.
c. Perform dimensional control survey prior and after assembly.
d. Check the position of nozzles, support, pipes, and brackets.
e. Perform a dimensional control survey of entire structures for the post-weld dimension
and levelling.
f. Perform the deflection and straightness inspection in plan section. Deflection shall be
measured from the point at both ends of unsupported span by using string.
