V/Q Ratio (Boards and beyond YT video)

V/Q < 1
- Too little ventilation or too much blood flow (both have same effect)
- Wasted perfusion
- Blood going where not enough O2 present
- Decreased oxygen (arterial)
- Increased carbon dioxide
- Similar effects to hypoventilation
V/Q > 1
- Too much ventilation or too little blood flow (both have same effect)
- Wasted ventilation
- Gas going in where no blood to make use of it
- Inefficient
- Increased dead space

Ventilation- Perfusion
Perfusion decreases more compared to ventilation from apex to base
TUBERCULOSIS
-TB in upper lobe because of high ventilation
in apex relative to perfusion >> high V/Q ratio
>> more oxygen >> conducive for TB growth

EXERCISE
- More blood flow, more ventilation >>
V/Q approaches 1
