POINTs of Interest:
Improvisation is the basis for education in a time of rapid change... emphasis on
improvisation which is at the heart of the Orff approach, improv in speech, song,
movement, instrumental play and in the art of teaching. (pg.28)
Teachers inspired by Schulwerk philosophy struggle to achieve a balanced approach in
which learning notation and practicing developing skills may conflict with the creative
imagination, exploration and improvisation. (pg.31)
Wellknown teacherauthors have presented different versions of pedagogical practice
based on Schulwerk, and all recommend teaching musical concepts and skills by leading
students through discovery, improvisation, composition and analysis. (pg. 3435)
POINTs of Value:
Musical competency evidences itself in the ability to speak the musical language. It’s
achieved part through improv, which also must be practiced with every developmental
step, linking to familiar materials while incorporating new concepts. (pg.28)
Technique and skills must be taught first and nurtured to enable growth in creativity and
improv. (pg.30)
Completely unmusical children are very rare, and that nearly every child is accessible and
educable (pg.33)
POINTs of Question:
We talk about classroom management and the autonomy of good class behaviour if the
lesson plan is well planned and thought out. How does Schulwerk method approach this?
Is there space for cognitive reflection? Or is it filled with activities, moving from one to
another?
How are there consistency in terms of results when Orff does not specify a methodology,
and relies heavily on the knowledge and insight of individual music teachers?
