2. Motivation – Keller’s ARCS Model (Describe how you will integrate each component into your
book trailer to get your audience’s attention.)
a. Attention: Our students usually like novels about young adults, from economically
disadvantaged neighborhoods dealing with teenage drama. This book has each of
those elements. By emphasizing each element, student interest is secured.
b. Relevance: Our school has a student population predominantly comprised of people of
color. In the era of Black Lives Matter, this book about racial tensions will appeal to their
need to be recognized as an essential part of society and deserving of respect and
recognition.
c. Confidence: Because this book has a Lexile measure of HL590L, it has content that will
appeal to all students while written at a level that students who read significantly below
grade level can comprehend and enjoy. Including this fact in the trailer will subtlely
signal to students that this book is appropriate for all readers.
d. Satisfaction: By including the social action elements that the main character takes in
this book in the trailer, students will be assured that there is justice in the world and that
they can make a difference.
