The percentage of dental problem in Indonesia was 25,9% in 2013. South Sulawesi becomes the
highest province with dental problem which is 36,2%. Dental and oral problem, such as caries, traumatic
injuries and bad habits, are the common diseases find in Indonesian children. The prevalence of dental
and oral problem in children of indonesia are 28,9% (5-9 years old) and 25,2% (10 – 14 years old). Dental
caries has the highest prevalence of dental problem in children under 12 years old which is 82%.

At the beginning growth of primary teeth, it is around 3-6 years old, dental treatment for
pediatric needs is considered seriously to prevent dental problems such as cavities and teeth protrusion.
These will be directly affected the children’s cranial structure. According to those problems, an effort to
improve the knowledge of normal and disabled children about the way to maintain their oral health is
needed. The empiric fact shows almost the children tend to play with gadget and they will easily
understand some information if they learn by what they love. Therefore, gadget would be an
educational media of health for children. (Sharma K & Kaur H, 2015).
 2. Introduction to Initiative

SMILE (Si Manggis Celebes for Children) is an initiative which is focusing to empowering the children,
between normal and disabled children to engage and provide a solution about how to maintain their
oral and dental problem through educational game called Si Manggis Celebes, selecting junior dental
health ambassador and dental examination in South Sulawesi. Si Manggis Celebes has been available on
play store and it will be modified, thus the disabled children could play it. The way to modify this game
are adding the subtitle for the audio and make the language become simple, those things will making
the disabled children easier to understand the information. Besides, Si Manggis Celebes will be available
soon on apple platform, with the result that all the mobile phone can access this game.
This project will be implemented in 4 cities of South Sulawesi: Makassar, Tana Toraja, Jeneponto,
and East Luwu. The reasons why we choose these 4 cities is because all the cities are represent of South
Sulawesi generally. Makassar is located on east region, Jeneponto is located on south region, East Luwu
is located on west region, and Tana Toraja is located on north region of South Sulawesi. Makassar and
Jeneponto are the cities with highest population of disabled children.
In order to implement this project, we will work collaboratively with elemantary school and
special needs school in those cities. Not only these schools will be involved, but dentistry students will
participate to educate the children from Hasanuddin University, also dentists who expert on normal and
disabled children, and others general dentist. Those element of parties are important because on
implementing this project there are 3 activities that we will do: dental health education through Si
Manggis Celebes, selection of junior dental health ambassador and dental examination by dentists. On
selecting the ambassadors, we will do a pre-post test with some questions based on the content of Si
Manggis Celebes, and teach the children how to be a basic counselor for dental health. There are 2
junior dental ambassadors for each city; 1 from elementary school student and 1 from special needs
student. The most important thing is the selections for ambassador could support the sustainability of
this project if Si Manggis Celebes will be not running again. There are 60 participants of children for each
city who involved with this project, 30 children from elementary school and 30 children from special
needs school for each region. Total targets for this project is 240 children as a students from elementary
school and special needs school.
The benefits of Si Manggis Celebes:
1. Create a new media of dental health education for children.
2. Develop, prevent, and promote dental and oral health in South Sulawesi.

How to educate the children by using Si Manggis Celebes:

1. Educating through Si Manggis Celebes will be held on every Friday for elementary school and on
Saturday for special needs school.
2. Giving understanding and knowledge about teeth, good nutrition to eat, how to brush teeth
well, and bad habit to avoid by playing a game.
3. Accompaniment by an dental medical expert for normal and disabled children.

Project Sustainability
To grow and expand this project, we plan to extent the impact of our project beyond its initial 6-
18 months through the followings:
1. Si Manggis Celebes will be continuously update every version in play store and app store. It will
be available for teenager and adult version.
2. Besides, Instagram account of Smile for Celebes will be intensively updated (about the new
version of Si Manggis Celebes, information about dental and oral health and also about our
social activities) in order for people to give their feedback, comment, and recommendation.

Si Manggis Celebes features:

For children, playing game often make them be a game-addict. As a people who has health
background, we have been considered about this. Thus, we make “security parent authorization”
feature for this game in order to avoid the addiction affect from the game. This feature work after 30
minutes of playing the game and it will be automatically close. The roles of parent are so important for
this project: limit the screen time for their child (30 minutes per day), they could learn from the game
about how to maintain their children oral and dental health, directing the children when they are at
home (not only in their school they can learn).
