Introduction:
Measurement is important to describe world and to understand the numbers and units that
we encounter every day. This will help us to make decisions based on our understanding. For
example, to know how long it takes to paint a wall with a given area, what is the life span of a
certain animals in months or in years, what time you wake up every morning to go to school on
time. In this world, there are many varied situations that needs decision based on our understanding
of numbers and units that we encounter every day.

In this lesson, you can learn measures of time with different units to be used, how to convert
unit in measures of time from one to another unit, and to solve word problems involving time. To
know the objectives of this module, let us turn to the next page.

80% of the total score.
Our lesson is all about measures in time. You should know the appropriate and reasonable
unit of measures to be used in measures of time, how to convert unit of time from one to another
and to solve word problems involving time.
Are you ready? Now, let us begin our lesson by turning to the next page!
Lesson 1. Measures of Time
Joshua needs to wake up 10 minutes before 2:00
P.M. to go to church and attend the afternoon mass.

How to show ten minutes before 2:00 P.M. in the

clock?

We use A.M. and P.M. to indicate time. A.M indicates

the time between 12:00 midnight and 12:00 noon
while P.M. indicates the time between 12:00 noon and
12:00 midnight.

Let us study the clock.

The long hand tells the minute. It moves

from 1 up to 60 minutes for a complete revolution.

The short hand tells the hour. It moves from

1 up to 12 for a complete revolution.

Let us look at the clock, the short hand points between 1 and 2 and the long hand points at
10, so read this as 50 minutes. Thus, the clock tells us that the time is one-fifty, that can be written
also as 1:50 o’clock or we can read this in a more expressive way as “ten minutes before 2 o’clock.
We can use the terms “before”, “after”, “quarter to” to tell the time.
Now, do you know how to use clock to tell the time? Then, on the next section you will
know the different units to be used in measuring time and when to use it appropriately and in a most
reasonable in every situation.

Section 1.1 Different Units in Measures of Time

 How long did Joshua walk from his house to the market?

Can it be 1 hour? 30 minutes? 1 day? Or 1 week? Or even 1 month?

????????????????
How far is his
house to the
market?
Now, do you find it hard to answer this question? Since you don’t know the distance from
Joshua’s house to the market, you cannot estimate the time it takes in walking from his house to the
market. You even confused what exact unit of measures to be used. To know the most reasonable
unit to be used, you have to know first the different units of measuring time.

Every day in life, time interval are usually measured in days, hours, minutes and seconds.
The most reasonable units to be used in measures of time depends on the situation. Weeks, months
and years are also units of measuring time.

ACTIVITY 1
Choose the most reasonable unit for measuring each time interval.
1. Basketball practice
2. A television commercial
3. A blink of the eye
4. Time spent sleeping
5. Driving practice
6. A 1- kilometer walk
7. Writing an essay
8. Falling objects
9. Taking a bath
10. Paint a 12ft by 15 ft wall

You can check your activity using the key found on the last page of this module. If you
answered it correctly, then, proceed immediately to the next section. But if you not get the answers
correctly, then, reread the lessons and understand the examples then, take the activity again and
again until you will get it right.
Section 1.2 Conversion of Unit in Measures of Time

Converting units of measure means to change a unit of measure from one to another. Units
of time can be changed to its equivalent units.

How many hours in

3 days?

Here are the different conversion factors in measures of time.

CONVERSION: MEASURES OF TIME

1 year (yr) - 12 months (mo)
1 month - 4 weeks (wk)
1 week - 7 days (da)
1 day - 24 hours (hr)
1 hour - 60 minutes (min)
1 min - 60 seconds (s.)
Please these illustrative examples below:

Example 2
Convert the measurement to the indicated unit of measure.
1. 36 hr = ______ da
2. 3, 000 s = ______ min
3. 91 da = ______ wk
4. 3,600 minutes = ______days
Solution:
1. 24 hours = 1 day
1 𝑑𝑎
36 hr x = 1.5 days
24 ℎ𝑟

Thus, 36 hours = 1.5 days.

2. 1 minute = 60 seconds

1 𝑚𝑖𝑛
3,000 seconds x = 50 minutes
60 𝑠𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑑𝑠

Thus, 3, 000 seconds = 50 minutes.

3. 1 week = 7 days
1 𝑤𝑒𝑒𝑘
91 days x = 13 weeks
7 𝑑𝑎𝑦𝑠

Thus, 91 days = 13 weeks.

4. 1 hour = 60 minutes
1 day = 24 hours

1 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟 1 𝑑𝑎𝑦
3, 600 min x x = 2. 5 days
60 𝑚𝑖𝑛 24 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠

Thus, 3,600 minutes = 2.5 days

And now, are you ready for the challenge? Do the activity below and write your answers in
your notebook. Good luck!
ACTIVITY 2
Convert the measurements to the indicated unit.
1. 30 days = ____ hour
2. 90 minutes = ____ day
3. 4,500 seconds = ____ minutes
4. 7,200 seconds = ____ hours
5. 7,200 minutes = ____days

How do you find your activity? You can find the answer keys on the last page of this
module, then, you can check your answers. If you got it correctly, then proceed to another lesson.
But if you did not get it, then, do the activity again and again until you will get it right.
Section 1.3 Solving Word Problems Involving Time

To apply your knowledge in measuring time and converting unit from one to another, let us
solve some real life problems involving time.

EXAMPLE 3
The painter cover the 10 ft by 10 ft - wall in 40 minutes with latex paint. How long will it
take to cover the wall applying two coats of the latex paint in hour?
 It takes 40 minutes to paint the wall with a latex paint. Because two coats are to be
applied on the same wall, you need to multiply time consumed by 2.
40 minutes x 2 = 80 minutes
Since the problem asked the hour it takes to apply two coats, convert 80 minutes to hour.
1 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟
80 minutes x 60 𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑢𝑡𝑒𝑠 = 1.3 hours

Therefore, it takes 1.3 hours to cover the wall applying two coats of the latex paint.

EXAMPLE 4

1. Find the elapsed time between 3:35 A.M. and 2:45 P.M.
2:45 P.M. 14 hours 45 minutes
3:35 A.M. 3 hours 35 minutes
11 hours 10 minutes
To get 2:45 P.M., you need to
add 2 hours and 45 minutes to
12 hour to get 14 hours and 45
minutes.

Therefore, there are 11 hours and 10 minutes elapsed time between 3:45A.M. and 2:34 P.M.
2. Angie started making her project in Arts at 9:00 A.M. and finished it at 12:30 P.M. How
many minutes did Angie make her project?

12 hours 30 minutes Subtract.

- 9 hours 0 minutes
3 hours 30 minutes

Thus, it takes 3 hours and 30 minutes in making her project. But, we need to convert 3 hours
to minutes to answer the problem.

Using, 1 hour = 60 minutes,

60 𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑢𝑡𝑒𝑠
3 hours x = 180 minutes
1 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟

So, 3 hours = 180 minutes

Then, 3 hours and 30 minutes is 210 minutes.

Therefore, it takes 210 minutes in making her project.

This example shows how to find the elapsed time. Elapsed time is measure of time that has passed
from one time to another.

Now, are you ready to take the challenge? Do the Activity 3 to find your understanding in
measures of time.

ACTIVITY 3

Solve the following word problems.

1. Mae left for school at 7:30 A.M. and came home at 5:30 P.M. How long was she gone?
2. Delia finished sewing 2 dresses in a day. How many dresses she will sew in a week?
3. FJ can write 150 words in 5 minutes. How many hours it takes to write 3,000 words?

You’re done with your Activity 3, look at the key answers on the last page of this module to
check your work. If you do not answer it correctly try to find out the mistakes you made. Then, try
to go through again the lesson and understand the concept until you find the correct answers. But if
you got the perfect score, then proceed immediately to the Selftest found on the next page to check
your understanding about measurements. This test is not graded, it only measures your
understanding about the topic. Goodluck!
