BASKETBALL

Basketball is a popular game in North America. The National Basketball

Association (NBA) is one of the major sports leagues, of which USA and Canada
are members. The origin of basketball can be traced back to 1891. Dr. James
Naismith founded this game. The sport came into existence as a result of his
efforts to find some indoor recreational activity. Naturally, Dr. Naismith became
the first coach of this sport, and went on to specialize in sports physiology.

Basic Basketball Facts

In this sport, the main objective is to score points by placing the basketball in
the opponent's basket which is kept at a height of 10 ft. There are 5 five players
each, in both the teams.

Scoring is done by shooting the ball in the basket, while dribbling helps the
players to advance towards the opponent's basket. Passing is also an important
move in basketball, because it helps to cover the distance quickly. There are
many rules and regulations in basketball that discourage any unfair moves by
players.

The duration of the game played at the international level is divided in 10 min
quarters; while in the NBA League, the quarters are of 12 min each. The court
size is 28 by 15 m (in an international game); while the NBA League uses 29 by
15 m size courts.

The positions of players in basketball after 1980 have been specifically named
and are as follows:

 Point guard
 Shooting guard
 Small forward
 Power forward
 Center

Interesting Facts about Basketball

The sport has grown a lot over the years and there are many facts about this
fast-paced game. Let's glimpse into some interesting facts about basketball.

First Game of Basketball: The first basketball game was held on 20th
January, 1892. The court was half the size of courts used at the NBA League
nowadays and only one point was scored in the whole match. In this game,
there were nine players in each team.

Basketball Soars to Popularity: To learn this new sport, people from different
regions flocked to the YMCA Training school, where the game had originated.
Basketball became popular in the USA and Canada in a short span of time.

College Basketball: In the first inter-college match, the School of Agriculture

from the University of Minnesota defeated Hamline School of Hamline
University.

Women's Basketball: It started in 1892 at the Smith College in Northampton,

Massachusetts. Senda Berenson who learned basketball from Dr. James
Naismith made some changes in the rules, so as to make the game suitable for
women. The first women's intercollegiate game was held on 21st March, 1893,
between the Berenson's freshmen and the sophomore class.

Basketball in High Schools: In USA, basketball has always been a popular

sport from the beginning itself. Before the television started covering national
level matches, school basketball was the most popular sport.
Rules of Basketball

The rules of basketball are the rules and regulations that govern the play,
officiating, equipment and procedures of basketball. Most leagues, including
the National Basketball Association, govern their own rules. In addition, the
Technical Commission of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA)
determines rules for international play.

Original Rules

James Naismith published his rules for the game of "Basket Ball" that he
invented:

1.) The ball may be thrown in any direction with one or both hands.

2.) The ball may be batted in any direction with one or both hands.

3.) A player can't run with the ball. The player must throw it from the spot on
which he catches it, allowance to be made for a man running at good speed.

4.) The ball must be held in or between the hands; the arms or body must not
be used for holding it.

5.) No shouldering, holding, striking, pushing, or tripping in any way of an

opponent. The first infringement of this rule by any person shall count as a
foul; the second shall disqualify him until the next basket is made or, if there
was evident intent to injure the person, for the whole of the game. No
substitution shall be allowed.

6.) A foul is striking at the ball with the fist, violation of rules three and four
and such described in rule five

7.) If either side makes three consecutive fouls, it shall count a goal for the
opponents (consecutive means without the opponents in the mean time making
a foul).

8.) A goal shall be made when the ball is thrown or batted from the grounds
into the basket and stays there (without falling), providing those defending the
goal do not touch or disturb the goal. If the ball rests on the edges, and the
opponent moves the basket, it shall count as a goal.
9.) When the ball goes out of bounds, it shall be thrown into the field and
played by the first person touching it. In case of dispute the umpire shall throw
it straight into the field. The thrower-in is allowed five seconds. If he holds it
longer, it shall go to the opponent. If any side persists in delaying the game, the
umpire shall call a foul on that side.

10.) The umpire shall be the judge of the men and shall note the fouls and
notify the referee when three consecutive fouls have been made. He shall have
power to disqualify people according to Rule 5.

11.) The referee shall be judge of the ball and shall decide when the ball is in
play, in bounds, to which side it belongs, and shall keep the time. He shall
decide when a goal has been made and keep account of the baskets, with any
other duties that are usually performed by a scorekeeper.

12.) The time shall be two fifteen-minute halves, with five minutes rest
between.

13.) The side making the most points in that time is declared the winner.

This game is very different than the one played today. For example, dribbling
and most physical contact are not allowed. Some of this evolution is discussed
below.
