Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

Welcome to Vacherie Elementary School! Hello my name is Megan

Lowery-Pearley. I will be your child’s Kindergarten teacher this year. I have five
children. Jordyn and Jaden just graduated from Dutchtown High School. Jewel Is
in 6th grade at Dutchtown Middle. Javonni attends 3rd grade at Spanish Lake
Primary. Jayce is 2 ½. I am looking forward to a wonderful year with you and your
child. My outgoing personality, love of children, education, and experience make me
a strong teacher. I am determined to become successful and have a very strict
recipe that includes preparation, planning, discipline, and knowledge.
There are several things that I would like for you to know about our Kindergarten
class. Your child’s school supplies should be left at school. There should also be a
supply of crayons, pencils, scissors and glue at home. Please replenish pencils,
erasers, and crayons.
I am dedicated to giving each and every child the best education that I can
provide, but education does not just take place at school, it also takes place at
home. To do your part in helping to educate your child, I ask you to take time to:
 Ask your child what they learned
 Help your child with any homework that they may have
 Read to your child each day
 Ask me any questions you may have
 Make sure your child knows school is a place for learning

I appreciate your support in advance and look forward to a very successful year
with your child in first grade. My career in teaching for ten years has prepared me
to be a facilitator of change, reflective professional, and an all around team player,
My philosophy of Education is a very simple one: Learning Should Be Fun! My main
focus in first grade is to prepare your student to reach their highest potential in
reading, writing, language, spelling, science, and social studies in a nurturing
environment.
My planning period is Monday, Wednesday, and Friday_12:30-1:30_. You can also
reach me by e-mail mlowery@stjames.k12.la.us or at school 258-4680.

Thank you,
Mrs. Pearley
School Attendance
It is important for your child to have regular and prompt attendance
to ensure his/her school success. We begin our day right after the
morning announcements. If your child is tardy, please have him/her
stop by the office to pick up a tardy slip for entry into the classroom.
In the event that your child goes home a different way or there is an
emergency, please send a note or contact the office. It is your child’s
responsibility to notify/remind the teacher of missed assignments
and test when absent.
Our school hours are from 7:50 a.m. to 3:05 p.m.

Morning Conversations
It’s our policy to limit conversations with parents to no longer than
five minutes in the morning. I feel it is important for our day to begin
with all of our attention focused directly on our students. I prefer
written notes to inform us about changes on dismissal or to have a
conference.

Correspondence
I will send a Homework sheet home each Monday. The Homework
sheet will highlight current activities, homework, behavioral sheet,
vocabulary, and spelling word list, study guides, and materials being
covered for that week. Please check your child’s folder daily for
school information. Please put all notes and information you would like
for me to have in the folder. I have found that communicating with
parents through note writing is very effective. Please check your
child’s folder daily for notes or other information from the office or
classroom. A weekly test folder will be sent home every Wednesday.
Please sign and return the following day.

Labeling
To get things started, please label everything your child brings to
school including backpacks, money, and jackets.

Money
Any time that you send money for your child, please make sure that it
is in a sealed envelope. On the outside of the envelope, please include
the following information:
Your child’s first and last name
Teacher’s name
The purpose for the money
The amount
In the event that the envelope is left on the bus or dropped in the
hallway, it can be identified and returned.

Book Orders
Throughout the year your child may be given the opportunity to
purchase books through book clubs. This is a great time to enhance
your child’s reading skills.

Birthdays
Birthdays are special days for children. You may wish to send in a
snack for your child’s classmates on his/her special day. If you are
sending something please send the snack (cupcakes, cookies, etc.) in
the morning.

Grading Scale
A= 100-93
B= 92-85
C= 84-75
D= 74-67
F= 66-0

Language (Grammar and Writing)‹ Students will take an

assessment
based upon the skill taught for the week(s). Also included
as a test grade
will be writings starting in 2 weeks that are done in class
specifically to be graded.

Reading‹ At the end of each Reading lesson, students will

be given
an assessment based upon what was taught that week. It is
made up of
questions on the weekly selection(s), phonics skill,
comprehension skills,
and robust vocabulary. Reading tests will be listed on the homework
sheet weekly. Students will be required to read the test.

Handwriting‹ Assessed using a three-letter scale, S-

Satisfactory, N-Needs Improvement, or U-Unsatisfactory.
Common Core ‹ A big shift in Louisiana schools is continuing
to take place. Louisiana has adopted common core
standards to drive instruction and prepare students to be
more college or career ready. Students will be expected to
do more critical thinking.

Homework‹ Homework will be given nightly. It is a

reinforcement of what was learned in school for the day.
Please only help your child if needed and not do it for them.
Students will face the consequence of staying inside for

Eureka Math is the series used for math. It is divided into modules and
further broken down into lessons and topics.

*Reading grade will be calculated as follows: Tests 80% and Fluency 10%, and
Literature Circle Groups, tasks, and discussions 10% ---students will be held
accountable for homework as well.
